How many rookies make the Leafs next year?

Zaitsev should make the team, which takes up a spot from Percy/Harrington potentially.

Vesey is another wildcard who should be NHL ready if we sign him.

I don't have much faith in the Leafs re-signing Leivo. Yeah losing an asset sucks but I don't see them using a contract spot on a guy like him.

They can't likely trade him for anything and re-signing him just to trade his seems unlikely too.

Not sure why everyone thinks Percy is a lock to make the team. He may not even be in the organization next year.

Ya, I can see what your saying about Percy and Leivo maybe not being really in the long term plan and getting squeezed out.

Vesy and Zaitsev as wildcards - sure. Its a possibility.

Next year should be pretty exciting, plenty of youth coming up, none of which would be classified as "rushed". These guys are ready.

At the start of the season I'd expect all of Nylander, Marner, Zaitsev to break camp with the team.

Harrington, Leivo, Sohsnikov, Percy, Loov all have a good chance to make the roster. I also wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they are traded. Waivers could play a part in where they start. Does anyone know who has to go through waivers to be sent down next year?

Brown will start in the AHL but I fully expect him be called up half way through the season. Leipsic is probably in the same boat.

If the team doesn't get Stamkos we'll have lots of cap room to play with and I'd fully expect the Leafs to use it whether it be for signing some depth UFAs on short term like we did this past off-season OR taking on a cap dump (and possibly gaining an asset from it) OR trading out secondary pieces like Leivo, Soshnikov, Percy, Loov, etc. to get a youngish established piece with a higher cap hit from a team with cap trouble like how we got Versteeg a few years ago for a bunch of spare parts.

100% IMO:
Nylander
Marner - He's done with the OHL. Give him sheltered 3rd line minutes and PP time. 40 points.
Leivo
Harrington

Solid chance:
Soshnikov
Brown

Zaitsev is 100% on the team.

What I'd like to see.

JVR - Stamkos - Komarov
Lupul - Nylander - Brown/FA
Leivo/Vesey - Kadri - Marner
Winnik - Carrick - Morin?/FA
Froese

Gardiner - Phaneuf
Rielly - Zaitsev
Hunwick - Corrado
Harrington - Percy

Bernier
Reimer

- Sign Stamkos to a 7 year deal, in the range of 68M-74M
- Sign Reimer to a 1 year deal, at the same salary as Bernier
- Sign Jimmy Vesey if available.
- Sign Nikita Zaitsev
- Sign a veteran RW or two to a 1 year deal.

Bailey, Percy, Morin, Leivo, Sparks, Carrick and Harrington all either have to make the team or go on waivers.

I'll assume Percy Sparks, Leivo and Harrington make the team.

I doubt Reimer would take that deal.

He could get a multi-year deal with a higher AAV as a UFA on the open market.

Percy and Leivo will likely be traded. Carrado will be a Marlies next year.

Marner and Nylander both make the Leafs. Look for us to be busy at this year's trade deadline and the roster for next year to be less cloudy.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Percy traded either. I've got a feeling he's fallen out of favour with management

to be fair half the players listed are seasoned rookies not 18 year Old ones, so the idea we couldn't have more then a couple is non sense

They are simply utility players

and will be called up only when needed

and it will be who is best fit at the time

no keepers as of yet for 2016

IF we do happen to sign Zaitsev, he will be a lock

Go Leafs Go

I think by this point in the season, we can see that Babcock favours having veterans in the line-up over rookies.

That being said, I could see up to 4 rookies start the season with the Leafs next year.

Nylander - too much skill to stay with the Marlies

Soshnikov - will be called-up soon and the team will fall in love with his ability to prolong plays with his possession capabilities

Zaitsev - The only reason that he would come over is to play on the big club. I think he'll be given every opportunity to do so.

Loov - He's got the size and skating to play at the next level. Put him on the 3rd pairing with the ability to kill penalties.

What makes you think that Corrado can clear waivers? I doubt he'll be a Marlie.

With 11 first year players, ya, expect that high pick cause we'd finish dead last in the league.

How would you guys rank the following as prospects?

Leivo...3rd line at best
Leipsic...3rd liner, fill in at 2nd
Hyman...3rd liner at best
Soshnikov...3rd liner, fill in at 2nd
Kapanen...2nd liner, possible 1st line player
Brown...2nd liner with the chance of wearing a letter

We've still got a way to go getting top notch talent.

As of right now, I see the team looking something like this next year:

Van Riemsdyk - Bozak - Marner
Holland - Kadri - Komarov
Leivo - Nylander - Morin
Lupul - Froese - Winnik
Soshnikov

Hunwick - Rielly
Gardiner - Phaneuf
Marincin - Harrington
Corrado

Reimer
Bernier

I don't see a need to rush Timashov, Brown, Kapanen.... promote them slowly, these are the talents you want to ease into the lineup to be a bit more cap friendly long term.

Would like to leave Marner in the OHL as well, he looked lost in exhibition with the Leafs, see him as two years away from joining the league comfortably (year in the OHL and one in AHL).

Zaitsev, Percy, Nylander, Sparks and hopefully Laine/Puljujarv/Matthews the jump IMHO

Nylander,Leivo, Zaitsev, If we get Matthews then him and Maybe Loov or percy. Pulju/Laine could also potentially make the team if we get them, more likely Pulju, i think management would want to refine Laine's game a bit more in the A. I dont see Marner making it as i think management will give him another year to grow physically. Timashov,Nielsen,Kapanen will be in the A

I was thinking we add 1-2 rookies a year. At the most 3.

2016-17: Nylander and Zaitsev
2017-18: Marner and Timashov
2018-19: Soshnikov, Brown and Kapanen
2019-20: Rookie from 2017 draft. By this time it will be expected that the Leafs make the playoffs, much like we expect the Raps to make the playoffs nowadays
2020-21: Rookie from 2018 draft
2021-22: Rookie from 2019 draft
2022-23: Babcock's last year all the current rookies will be on the team by then

That's how I see it going down. I would PREFER that it moves along much faster. I'm not sure why a lot of you are saying Zaitsev makes the team next season, I listed him for next season because we could use a good defenceman. I'd love that to be the case, but I'm not sure why they would rush him into the NHL without giving him some time to develop on the farm team or Q or similar league
