I think each generation always thinks the successive one is softer than they were.

Right now, the skill level across the board is as good as it’s ever been. Modern equipment, training, diet, rule changes, etc. have led us to the “Skill Era” we’re currently in.

Not really, the 70s was the biggest decade of expansion. Many of those extra roles were not filled with boring mediocre hockey players but with garbage players, 5 min a game goons, boxing hobos on skates for entertainment. It has taken decades to clean up the mess from the 70s and affected two generations of young minds into thinking it was normal/good. You can see on the NHL stats page just how much the number of majors jumped. Check of the number of majors in the 50 years to expansion vs the number post expansion

Messier had so many elbows through his career that they ran out of names. He has both the Godmother and Fairy Godmother of all elbows.




Rick Mattress elbow was so damn nasty.
That's gotta be over 9,000 games.
