I think each generation always thinks the successive one is softer than they were.
Right now, the skill level across the board is as good as it’s ever been. Modern equipment, training, diet, rule changes, etc. have led us to the “Skill Era” we’re currently in.
Not really, the 70s was the biggest decade of expansion. Many of those extra roles were not filled with boring mediocre hockey players but with garbage players, 5 min a game goons, boxing hobos on skates for entertainment. It has taken decades to clean up the mess from the 70s and affected two generations of young minds into thinking it was normal/good.
