How many games suspension does "The Mother of all Elbows" get in today's NHL?

For those lucky enough to have seen Pavel Bure play, you know he was one of the best snipers the game has ever seen. But, he wasn't a soft skilled player. He would throw checks, etc, and against Dallas threw "The Mother of all Elbows" against Stars enforcer Shane Churla:

How many games suspension does Bure get in todays NHL? True story: he only got fined $500 for this hit!

Churla should learn to keep his head up.

Still 0 games for that stick swinging earlier in the video, 10+ for that elbow. Probably 20+ honestly with how obviously intentional it was, league would throw the book at Bure yet ignore slightly less egregious examples.

I thought this thread was Domi on Niedermayer. Sort of the opposite of the Bure-Churla play in terms of the skill and the goon.

Unreal that he just annihilates him a mile away from the puck and the ref does nothing.

The reality is we also need to know who threw the hit. If it was some 4th liner he honestly might not play another game that year but if it was a 1st line player maybe a couple of games

He was soft though, and didn't throw checks.

He did this time though, and that was late and dirty and with obvious intent to injure.

Would start with 10 games, maybe 20. I guess with no prior history, closer to 10.

But Churla probably just came back the next game, because hockey was different 25 years ago.

No matter how many games, I'd be mad that it wasn't enough.

I'm glad headshots and blindsided are mostly gone

Sorry I have to disagree with the bolded part. Bure was a soft skilled player that played at a time where if you were small and soft, you had to be cheap and you likely had enforcers to stick up for you. I don't think Bure ever through a check without jumping and without leading with the elbow. Sure he was fast and he could score, but lets not give him credit for much else.

As for the question, if this was his first infraction it would be a game or 2. However since Bure through hits like this all the time, it was likely not his first infraction, so he should get more games. However, since he was a "star" player, a few of his infractions would have been over looked and or would have been fines.

Not sure about the suspension, but holy moly i almost forgot how rough this sport has been in the past. Completely changed over the years.

I remember as a kid even going to WHL games there would easily be 3-5 fights every single game.

And not just the hug and grab type like full out chucking haymakers with zero regard for defensive fighting.

Messier had so many elbows through his career that they ran out of names. He has both the Godmother and Fairy Godmother of all elbows.

Moose was savage, after Gordie Howe he might be the best power forward of all time easily.

Those old Battle of Alberta’s would have people getting criminal charges now.

It was a lot of fun to watch that style of play. A beautiful team sport with a level of violence bordering on the WWE, MMA range.

And then a large portion of that generation, including Bure himself, physically fell apart as a result. It wasn't anywhere near sustainable and looking back, almost feels unethical to have fed people into that meat grinder for entertainment.

90s hockey was arguably the most exciting era of hockey (Wings v Avs anyone?) but yeah, the toll it took on the guys from that era is undeniable.

We simply weren’t aware about the long term effects of brain injuries the way we are now though.

I don't know about that. When I was a kid in the 90s, all the adults talked about how hockey had gotten soft compared to the 70s.

Touché.

I think each generation always thinks the successive one is softer than they were.

Right now, the skill level across the board is as good as it’s ever been. Modern equipment, training, diet, rule changes, etc. have led us to the “Skill Era” we’re currently in.
