Unbelievable to me that he falls this far. 17th on my board. Ppl tend to forget that he was learning a new position this year. He's a natural left winger, moved to centre this year, and didn't seem comfortable. Still had decent showings at international comps, and the super series.

We commonly get the post on here how easy it is for venters to move to wing, and how difficult it is for wingers to move to centre. Taylor Hall struggled as a pivot. So did Comtois. He was my top choice for the Oilers at 22. A line for the future of Comtois-McDavid-Puljujarvi could be a beast at both ends of the ice.

maxime is predicted to end up going mid second in most mock drafts. His stock took a hit for several different reasons. He could be the steal in the real draft or trivia question. He went from being a top ten pick 16 months ago to being a project in a bad draft year--this is a project draft after the first two. The biggest issue is will his skating be able to make the jump the the NHL?

A little added context: Kristian Vesalainen had a similar fall to Comtois this year. But he salvaged his draft year with a dominant performance at the U18s. In 'mock drafts' Vesalainen was going in the second round or late first up until then. The difference between the two? One played their natural position all year, while one did not. I don't disagree that Comtois could use a bit of work on his skating, but that's all the more reason to think that his position change really affected his production this year. You need to be a better skater to play centre.
