The cap number is misleading. Pitkanen doesn't come off of the books until we need him to, by my understanding. This means that we've got the $1mil plus whatever Pitkanen contributes to that. If we sign someone that puts us over the cap, THEN we can take Pitkanen off. It's confusing, mostly because it's stupid. But we definitely have the room to add a Morrow-type (or sign Dvorak).

wow really? i don't generally pay much attention to the dollars and cents and rely on just reading about it. appreciate the post but i thought there was still a bit more in the bank than that.:dunno:

http://capgeek.com/faq/how-does-long-term-injured-reserve-LTIR-work

The placement of a player on LTIR does not remove the player's cap hit from the team's cap payroll — the cap hit continues to count. Nor does the placement of a player on LTIR provide the team with any additional cap-space savings that can be banked for future use while the team operates below the upper limit.

Placing a player on LTIR only provides relief if the team's cap payroll or "Averaged Club Salary" begins to exceed the upper limit. The amount of LTI relief is limited to the amount the team has gone over the cap — less the amount of cap space the team had at the time the LTIR transaction took place — and not the entire amount of the injured player's salary.

----------

So Joni cap hit is still there somewhat..

Once the camp shakes out, we will probably only have 700k in space.

"once the camp shakes out" meaning once they sign who they want like Dvorak for instance? do they still potentially have enough to sign some of the guys in camp or is Dvorak the only player not with a contract? i assume yes. any further additions would require a trade then.

For some reason when you look up images of Ron Hainsey on Bing, you get this photo:

So with what CapGeek shows us having (subject to change of course), some will go down to Charlotte and some up. But that is what we are working with. Palushaj could very well be Dvorak

In a technical sense it is, but for practical purposes we can take almost all of it out of the equation. If I understand the rules correctly, we will want to go ahead and make any last-minute signings to get close to the cap limit, at which point we will be allowed to exceed the cap by almost all of Joni's $4.5m.

alright, then in fact they still have $4.5 million in space and insurance will cover Pitkanen's salary right? am i reading this correctly and is it that straight forward?

This is correct.

Capgeek's article on it explains it pretty well:
This means that in order to maximize cap space, teams generally want their cap payroll or "Averaged Club Salary" to be as close to the cap as possible before putting a player on LTIR. This places critical importance around the timing of placing a player on LTIR, especially at the start of the season.

Actually we would have to subtract whatever cap space we have at the time of placing Pitkanen on LTIR from Pitkanen's cap hit to calculate the amount of LTIR we would receive. That's why if we want to sign anybody without having to worry about the cap, we better sign them before Pitkanen goes on LTIR. We would actually have less cap space before the deadline if we don't sign another player before the season starts. If we sign Dvorak, we'll have more cap space for the deadline than if we didn't. Odd I know...

Love this. Now sign Morrow.

Honestly, I feel this could be one hell of a decent team.

One trade I'd like to mention now, if we're in the playoff hunt come deadline day, I'd love to see Max Lapierre as the 4th line C

What is it about Palushaj that have some penciling him the line-up over other guys? (Gerbe, Bowman, Dalpe, etc...)

How does Pitkanen's deal with the contract limit work? I couldn't find anything on Capgeek about it. The Canes are at 48 including him and not including Dvorak from my quick glance. I assume it doesn't count if he goes on LTIR, but I couldn't say for sure.

Without trying to throw personal prejudice into the equation I will offer a few answers:

1. New car smell.

2. Inexperience with the player's game.

3. Genuinely liking the player.

4. The fact that he played in the NHL last season.

5. The fact that he's waiver eligible and hasn't been waived before.

6. Arbitrary fandom.

In my personal opinion, if we don't sign Dvorak he makes the squad. I think Dalpe and Gerbe will get the nod. I like Palushaj's game, certainly more than Boychuk, but I feel like Dalpe is going to get every real chance to make it.

For those interested, while there's no number listed on the official site just yet, the media guide has Hainsey as 65. He wore that number in MTL and has worn 6 ever since.

I heard an interview with him the day he signed. He said he wasn't attached to 6 and that 65 was his first, even though short-lived number with the Habs.
