Canucks are definitely trending bad as they head into the All Star break. Going to happen during the season. See it all the time. Team is going well, but then fall off but still win. The next step is usually is a losing streak. Goes the other way as well. Team is in a funk but then begin, while still losing, to improve. That often leads to a winning streak. Good thing the All star break is there to maybe break that process up. Trouble is that some of the players, who certainly seem to need a break, are going to get tied up in the all star thing.

Good

Demko - got a little puck luck on top of being very good. Had to be first star in this one.

Garland - always good - maybe consistently the best Canuck (if you don't count Hughes) over the last couple of months.

Joshua - development this year has been unreal. Become a a top contributor on this team. Next contract presents the team with a quandry

Hughes - amazing player - just controls the game when he is out there. Needs consideration for MVP. Team couldn't come closed to the record they have without him.

Zadorov - never perfect but a real force again in this game. Makes players disappear when he checks them. Might be a more important re-sign than Hronek.

Micheyev - might have been his best game of the season. Had his wheels going and much more in the play.

Cole - is one player keeping the defense together. Makes the right play all the time and covering up for mistakes a lot.

Blueger - very much a glue player. Best PKer again. Had to worry when the late dive penalty was assessed to him.

Not Very Good

Hronek - one of the players whose play has gone down hill. Maybe a health issue but his skating is nothing like early in the season. Is getting tracked down and stripped of the puck and not giving himself the space to make good plays.

Lafferty - looking very ordinary and lacks the hustle he showed earlier. Becomes a very mediocre player when he can't keep up the high work rate.

Boeser - got some good service (especailly on the PP) but did nothing with it. Miller and Pettersson were very ordinary in their play and without them on top of their game, Boeser becomes useless. Team needs a true sniper to be with Miller and Pettersson who can exploit their abilities. I don't believe Boeser is that. Still think the best option with Boeser is to move him first chance you get and use the cap space gained to bring in that top end offensive player. Like they mentioned on the broadcast, Lindholm would be nice. If you had someone like him, you have a player not just trying to get on the end of plays but someone who is creating them himself.

Suter - scored but butchered some prime set ups others provided. Finish needs to better than this and overall game was not all that good either.

Others

Miller - good that team can reduce his ice time. Kind of coasted through the game. Pettersson about the a same.

Juulsen - rough start but settled down to play an ok game. Still they will miss Soucy big time. You wonder if Freidmann who has been playing well in Abbotsford will get a look.

Myers - another player whose game has slipped. Running around some and getting caught out of positiion. Also looked late on a lot f his coverage. Looks worn down and after a long period of very good play that's understandable. Loses it physically and he starts to also lose it mentally.

Kuzmenko - was important to the win and had an excellent start to the game. Still too many mistakes as game went on. Goes back to the KHL style of moving the puck back into this zone too much and again looked confused in certain aspects of the game. Game was step in the right direction but there still quite a ways to go.

A win is a win but I'm not sure Tocchet can be very happy with this one.

Actually thought 5 - 2 Nucks would have been a fair score for this one. Both goalies got lucky. We could have easily had 5 or more. They easily could have had 2 or 3. Neither team got bounces.

sure, there were a few disturbing moments, and against a bottom dweller, but its a win, and no one else hurt.

No complaints ....

Edit - and we are hoping for at least a 100 game season. You can't play playoff hockey for all 82 games, balls to the walls hockey. This is actually worth while load management. Like how we killed 3 - 4 minutes in this game just not moving the puck.

The all-star break can't come fast enough for this Canuck team right now. They start the game like they've all drunk a gallon of Red Bull, but then the energy-level just starts slipping.

It's a testament to their adherence to their 'system' that they can grind through these games and get a result. But a lot of these players need a re-set. Unfortunately they're sending five guys to the all-star game in TO, so their best players aren't going to get much of a break.

But this recent seven-game road- swing really sapped them. They'll hit the 49-game mark by the all-star break. Only 33-games remaining. If they beat Columbus and St. Louis they'll have 72 points.

Even if they were to go .500 the rest of the way, they'd still finish with 104 points. Start printing the playoff tickets.

Getting the lead and then going on cruise control for a shutout win is par for the course when you've effectively guaranteed a spot in the playoffs.

The mid-season apathy before the allstar break and especially the trade-deadline is natural and probably healthy.

The regular season is too long.

The time for a 1st overall team to ramp-up and play 60 minutes is the final 15-20 games. The goal isn't to win the President's trophy, Art-Ross, Vezina, Richard, Lindsay or Norris.

We want to win the Calder :sarcasm: and maybe the Stanley Cup.

It’s a tough market… now we are complaining about the quality of our wins… sorry the boys put up a W that wasn’t a 5 star circus with Elephants and a trampese. I personally think them being able to maintain leads and run out the clock is something important to practice and have confidence in.
I remember plenty of posts like that in 2010-2012 era when we won back to back presidents trophies, complaining that we only played half a game or half the team didn’t show up etc.
Yeah, there are going to be games like that in an 82 game schedule for a bunch of reasons. A mid season game against a bottom feeder like the Hawks who are missing their only exciting player is probably going to be hard to get excited for after just playing the Leafs on HNIC and a road trip to the Big Apple. Good teams find ways to win these kind of games (even if it’s ugly)
when the team is tired and some guys are banged up and really need a rest. You take the two points and hope the energy level is up for the next game.

During 2011-2012, we won a ton of games that were 2-1, 3-2 type scores and we were complaining how the scoring on this team has dipped. Little did we know that turned out true. Team was burnt out.

This team is a fresh batch.

I'm guessing that may have been due to the Canucks sitting back with a lead?

The get-the-lead-and-protect-it-through-boringness strategy not only has worked, it could be a type of load management for the team. They aren't going balls to the wall in the third periods, but playing smart, efficient, boring hockey. This could really pay off long run.

Difficult to reconcile the team in the 1st period with the rest of the game. Is it a systems thing when playing with the lead, or does the team just slack off?

I personally think them being able to maintain leads and run out the clock is something important to practice and have confidence in.

Cancuks played 1 period of hockey and 2 periods of practices

after grabbing the early lead the canucks used exactly enough energy to preserve the shutout. no more no less.

this team’s strategy of dominating for a period and then trying to sleep the rest of the game to a standstill is much less exciting than the 2011 team’s strategy of sleepwalking through the first two periods of the game, then pouring it on like crazy in the third to get back into the game and eventually squeak out the win
