Phaneuf+our 1st pick this year for 1st overall (McDavid)

or

Kessel+our 1st pick this year for 1st overall (McDavid)

Would you do either for these?

I would do Phaneuf+our 1st if it was EDM, but if the price is Kessel+our 1st (top 6 I assume) would be a no go. The difference between McDavid and Kessel is not a good player like Werenski, Marner, Strome.

Kessel+our 1st pick this year for 1st overall (McDavid)

Would you do either for these?

The team that gets the first pick would never do this....why would then take on either of those contracts when McDavid is subjected to the ELC....

columbus makes the most sense for both sides
they are in win now but have a high pick because of injuries
have a #1 C and G
have solid vets
need scoring

Kessel is a big city kind of guy.....he wants to go to a large Casino, go out for Dinner and to some bars....remember he not married and likes the big lights. He would never accept a trade in my opinion to the Jets!

The spot light is huge in Winnipeg.....they are the only game in town!

Only game in town???ONLY GAME IN TOWN??? BOMBERS??? lol

They have a pretty decent downtown and they are the center of NA..geographically

I would do either of those in 2 seconds.

But it'll never happen, McDavid is untradable. The team that wins the lottery will be keeping him.

The way I see it going down:

Gone by the deadline(5): Franson, Winnik, Santorelli, Bozak, Polak
Gone in the summer(2): Phaneuf, Kessel

Jvr and Gardiner are signed to reasonable contracts and can stay and develop for another couple seasons before it is determined if they can be incorporated into the long term plans or not.

Sign Bernier and Kadri to reasonable long term deals, and treat them the same as Jvr and Gardiner.

Leave Robidas, Komarov, Lupul, and obviously Clarkson on the roster to provide some sort of leadership during the rebuild.
/Let the rebuild begin.

The way I would approach it

1- Move Winnik, Santorelli, Franson for picks or prospects hopefully we can at least acquire 2-#2 and a couple of 21-22 year old prospects blocked by players on contending teams who can't crack their lineup.

2- Move Phaneuf at the deadline if a good deals comes up to allow new voices in the room and leadership. Hopefully again a 1st from a team for this draft would be ideal plus a prospect and short term camp dump. It frees up money.

3 - Move Lupul and Bozak at the deadline for cap relief and any assets you can get.

4 - See what assets you have and where you can be lacking as you still have the Kessel chip to play down the road whether next season or the year after he should be dealt to put this team over the top last rebuild piece. His value will stay the same as he is a scorer.

5 - sign 1 year UFA this summer guys who can be flipped at the deadline to acquire more picks next year to stock the cupboard. Instead of giving away 2nd rounders acquire them.

I think there is enough building blocks or pieces that this won't have to be a 5 year EDM process.

But now is all about acquiring assets

The Darkest Timeline
I can't see Lupul getting anymore than a 2nd so I don't think he should be traded. If we can get a good prospect or more than a 2nd then he can be moved.

EDMs mistake was getting rid of all vets and then later only acquiring vets that were awful players at the time (Smyth, Ference, etc.). Make sure we keep a couple heart and soul players as well as at least 1 or 2 decent quality players that can be good influences (Lupul, Komarov, and Polak would be my current choices). If a big enough offer comes, you obviously move them... But I don't think these guys have high value, highest is probably Komarov but I'd definitely keep him.

I think JVR could be gone at next yrs deadline
If they get the right offer this deadline or at the draft
I think Shanny is looking at him to bring it every game and he doesn't
1st, top prospect and a roster player

In the right environment he will be a 60 to 70 point player

Kadri and Bernier are walking a fine line as well

I would still love to sign
Winnik and Santo this summer

Phaneuf to Dallas for Horcoff, Oleksiak and a 2nd. Done!
Kessel to I dunno where
Franson to I dunno where, just as long as he's gone

Keep Lupul to show the youngsters how to dress. If you're going to lose at least look good doing it!

1st trade is not a good one for the leafs, at all.

Curious to know what everyone thinks:

Does:
Kane (injury-prone, attitude concerns) + Bogosian (injury-prone) = Kessel?

IMO Kessel is worth more, but at least that much.

If so, does this set the bar? Can we expect a return similar to what the Jets got?

I know we may not be interested in Myers because of the re-build, but you'd have to think he's worth a 1st + 3rd worst-case.
