I would trade Holzer for even a 7th rd pick. Anaheim was interested in him once. But not sure what the market is on him now.

I want at least a 4th for him. He's serviceable, and unless we're pressed to the contract limit I see no point selling him for a 7th. Extend him for a reasonable 2-year 1-way contract and let him play his way onto the team next year.

Doubt it. Reinhart would fit in nicely as 2c

I sincerely doubt it as well, but they still have Zemgus Girgensons who could be their 2nd line center.

Also Cody Hodgeson has really struggled in Buffalo and he has 4 X $4.25 mil left aft this year. So the potential to take him back in the trade would take $17 mil off their hands. As a Ontario kid he might be able to rejuvenate his career.

However I would be extremely envious of a Sabres team that had McEichel -- Reinhart -- Girgensons as their future strength down the middle with the oldest of the 3 only 21 years old as their core.

It would be only a few years before they would blast past our Leafs.

So I thought perhaps a McEichel -- Kessel combo might be very enticing. Kessel would give them 40 goals minimum with a franchise center.

With Buffalo poised to land McDavid/Eichel does anyone believe if on the heels of the Kane trade would there be anyone that thinks Buffalo might deal Sam Reinhart in a blockbuster deal for Kessel?

Only if we tell the media Kessel is out with season ending surgery. Then Buffalo would be all over it help their tank, they'd have to have a couple roster pieces coming our way though to weaken their roster in the process.

Reinhart won't be moved IMO. Elite hockey IQ + very strong overall skillset, he could become a very very solid two-way pivot behind McDavid, giving them a 1-2 punch up the middle that ranks top 5, or even top 2-3 in the entire league.

Girgensens has looked pretty solid, but his ceiling is considered lower than Reinharts. I think we could maybe get Girgensens+ from Buffalo, but not Reinhart.

Problem is Buffalo is probably willing to move a lot of solid B-pieces (Grigorenko, their late 1st from this draft, 2nd rounders, prospects like Compher, etc), but they don't really have any solid central pieces to a Kessel trade.

They're not about to move their 2015 1st, Reinhart, or any of their young blueliners IMO. Without a stud on the blueline, they kind of need to rely on the depth of youth, and hope that 1-2 of them take steps forward to become a solid top pairing.

personally, i'd try to snag
Grigorenko
Zadorov/Ristolainen
1st ...better of the leftovers they still have

...and take my chances and the risk they turn out, and the scary thing is Buffalo can afford to make the deal, and not really suffer too much in loss of prospects. :shakehead

The sad part is Leafs haven't even started their rebuild and they are already 100 million miles behind where Buffalo would be after McDavid/Eichel land there this year with their rebuild.

What would Leafs need to do to match that?

McDavid - Nylander - Kadri is pretty solid down the middle

trade phaeuf, kessel, everyone else that we know is on the block, including Bozak, and Bernier ...add Reimer to the traded list, all for futures, run Christopher Gibson as our goalie, and callup Orr, McLaren, Frattin and play them a lot

Grigorenko can already take face-offs in the NHL 50.9, and his point production in the AHL as a 20 year old is .81 PPG. Kadri at 20 was .93, and Kadri still isn't 50% at the dot.

If you could grab him for a decent price, Sabres might be okay with moving him, as Reinhart and McDavid/Eichel are their 2 centers of the future. 6'3" center for the Leafs, and they could draft 6'3" Zacha this year.

Who is 1st. overall 2016?

Trade:
Kessel - 2016 first rounder
Phaneuf - 2016 first rounder
Kadri - 2016 first rounder
van Riemsdyk - 2016 first rounder
Bernier Oilers - 2016 first rounder.

Doesn't matter to who, sometimes good teams tank, look at the Kings might not qualify for the playoffs and would get a chance at McDavid this year.

For real. Buffalo barely started rebuilding like 2-3 years ago and they'll be adding McEichel + another 1st and several 2nds this year.

That is gonna be one full cupboard.

it's not hard to look at your team, and know there is a generational talent available in whatever year, and plan your demise in sync with that.
it only takes foresight, and courage, and our management has neither

GM Tim Murray was a scout, a GM in the AHL, and an assistant GM with Ottawa for 7 years.

This is what the Leafs need as their next hire. Experience.

Mc-Eichel, Reinhart, Girgensons, Kane, Grigorenko, Ennis, Bogo, Zadorov, Ristolainen, Mccabe.

2 firsts this draft, and a clear message that anyone on an expiring contract will be traded for more picks this draft.

This guy is making great moves. Love what he is doing with Buffalo.

Arizona born player Matthews, who would have apparently challenged McEichel this year, so he's kinda good. If Arizona don't win the lottery this year I expect they will next year.

One of the good things going for the Leafs in regards to trading Phaneuf is that he has "Big Name" appeal to the general fan base. For some reason or another Phaneuf's name recognition is a lot higher than his production warrants.

So for a team that wants to attract fans and sell tickets adding a name like Captain DION PHANEUF does have a value in itself which adds to his on ice value. Remember the sells pitch when he came to the Leafs.

Maybe a team like, Florida, Carolina, Arizona, Dallas and Columbus may see an extra incentive to add "star power" name recognition even if its 'fools gold'.

Would be nice if Phaneuf was playing and the coach tried to set up some plays to get his goal production up so that there is some extra oomph in trying to sell him off.

Even Kessel has a lot of star power appeal to help a ticket drive.

Probably doubtful to be traded at all before next season. Might as well keep him around as a veteran and roll the dice he'll gain value next season.

If Kessel/Phaneuf are moved off this team in the summer, keeping Lupul is not the worst thing possible. Perhaps it gives him a chance to get healthy (lol) and assume a role that makes him valuable at next years trade deadline. The fact that he is signed for 3 more years does not make him priority 1.

1. The UFAs
2. The fate of Kessel/Phaneuf in the summer

Shut him down the rest of the season.
Leafs could do without his goals right now anyways.
