Because despite his good season there's a lot of reason to think downward regression is coming and Montreal doesn't have the assets to buy high?

I mean I don’t expect him to hit 40 goals regularly, but watching him now, he’s a legitimate 1C.

Maybe. But he's shooting 23%. His career average prior to this year was 8%. Does he still look like a legitimate 1C if he regresses to that average and becomes a 15ish goal, 50-55 point center? That's a slight upgrade on what Drouin was. And Bill would cost a ton in a trade. Even if he's taken a real step forward (and I think he has), I don't see how Montreal can take that risk.

Montreal doesn't have the depth Vegas has to roll lines like they do and Montreal doesn't have a Schmidt or Miller or Theodore to stretch the ice either. And if they give up what it costs to get Karlsson, they wont be able to get that either.
