Stuff like that doesn’t necessarily matter to everyone.

If that is true, he probably doesn’t feel up for trying to fight it anymore and would rather just walk away. It’s not like he has much else to prove at the NHL level. He can walk away comfortably and be with his family.

I feel like if it were a matter of the vertigo returning as the reason he's walking away, we would've heard about that. I'm sure we'll hear more in the following days from someone like Friendman or LeBrun about what led to his decision.

I dont know how anyone can blame him. We are talking about a professional athlete, who I'm sure signed here with the idea for wanting to still stop some pucks and be mentor for Mackenzie.

What has happened between him signing and today is his personal business. People make wrong choices. Theres a good chance that after agreeing to a contract he thought about if its worth it to play anymore and risk another concussion hearing the horrible stories from the likes of Johan Franzen.

Maybe he shouldve thought about it more back when free agency happened, but people can change their mind. He has nothing to prove and nothing to be sorry for.

Does this leave Devils in a shitty situation? Sure it does, but after all its just hockey. All good to Corey.

You can blame him. He signed his contract with NJ exactly 3 months ago. Prior to that, he was informed months earlier that the Blackhawks were not going to bring him back, so he had plenty of time to mull this decision.

He made a commitment to the organization and seemed to fill a huge need for the team that they would've filled elsewhere. Now he decides to change his mind at the worst possible time instead of at least riding it out for four months...playing a game most people can only dream of and making more money than most of us will ever see in our lifetime doing so.

So yeah, I can blame him. It was a shitty thing to do to put the Devils organization and his (very temporary) teammates in this position.

Wow. So he sorta knew, that makes a difference, in my eyes at least. Happy he does what's best for him, but it definitely leaves us in a bad situation.

We would've been bad regardless. At this point, I'm really just hoping for improvement and growth from the young guys, that's really all there is to this season imo.

this is insane

don't you think if he knew he didnt want to play a few months ago, he would have retired then?

some of you guys are ridiculous

People don't generally retire on the spur of the moment. It's something that is at least being contemplated for a while. He probably hoped that the creative juices would start flowing once he got to camp, but then decided to call it a day after a couple practices. I think with Crawford he left his heart in Chicago.

The worst possible course of action would be him half-assing his way through a bad season until he finally quits. The Devils have time to pursue other options if they wish - not a lot of time, but the season hasn't started yet.

Damn, there goes my plan of posting Croooow gifs from MST3K all season...

Seriously though, I wish him well in retirement. I can't imagine it's ever an easy decision for any player to hang up the skates.

Well this season is looking better and better. It’s like after winning 3 cups were now cursed. Besides Hughes putting on a nice amount of weight, we’re probably looking at a top five pick. I mean no Nico, Bratt and a backup goaltender. Man this stinks.

This had to be something seriously weighing on him; whether his vertigo, past issues, injury concerns post-concussion, newborn at home, etc., highly doubt he'd be walking away from serious money and the sport he loves if it wasn't a big deal. Hope he and his family are alright.

As for the Devils...yeah, this definitely sucks, and absolutely hurts the team's chances of surprising anyone or being able to go on a nice run by taking advantage of having one of the division's better goalie tandems in a condensed season. Big picture, though, we know this is a development year: the core storyline of this season, no matter what, is "how much do the young guys develop?", and this doesn't change that reality.

Nico will get healthy, Bratt's contract will get settled, and we'll be seeing them along with Hughes, Blackwood, Smith, and others, and their collective development is still the most important thing to watch in 2021. Would just like to see a halfway decent backup goalie brought in for the sake of entertainment, since I think we're all pretty tired of having games that feel like automatic losses based on who's in net after the past couple of seasons.

How was Fitz supposed to know this about Crawford prior to signing him?

Is he supposed to go to every Vet now and ask "Hey by the way....Are you thinking of retiring? :silly:"?

Yeah that would go over well.

It was crappy timing of the utmost and the main blame goes to the one causing it (and it's not Fitz).

Well, it is a draft without a consensus #1 franchise player at the top so we're probably due to win the lottery again.

Any options for the devils? Are there any unsigned goalies left?

The options are ugly.

Jimmy Howard is out there, Craig Anderson is on a PTO but neither is a serious option.

Devils will have to watch the waiver wire or make a trade. Arizona and Toronto will be the top two teams to watch - unless they both carry 3 goalies (certainly a possibility) you try to scoop one up from there. Most likely that would be Dell getting waived or the Coyotes looking to trade Raanta.

I'm hoping Arizona might be willing to part with Raanta for a 4th or 5th to make room for Hill to back up Kuemper (Hill would have to clear waivers, so they're not sending him down). Seems like a decent chance they try to roll with 3 goalies though.

Really, I don't understand why everyone is upset about the timing.

Once Crawford signed, it basically didn't matter when he decided to retire as long as it was before the start of season. Lundqvist announced he'd be having surgery basically 2 weeks ago - the Caps don't have a real replacement for him.

The good news is that Crawford actually made a decision now vs leaving the Devils in limbo any longer. There will be goalies on the waiver wire. Last year, the Penguins waived Casey De Smith. The Devils - armed with an unproven rookie in MacBlack and a wobbly Schneider - decided it wasn't worth picking up De Smith. Five games in, we knew Cory was done, but the opportunity to pick up a reasonable goalie on the cheap was gone. Thankfully, that can't happen again.

Blackwood is also much more proven now. We don't need to coddle the kid. It's a short season. He can handle a heavier load.

I imagine they will look to find a vet off the waiver wire or something in case Wedge can't hack it, but Blackwood is the starter and he absolutely deserves to be.
