Any official word on what this means for his cap hit? Granted, the Devils are close to the cap limit, but more cap room means more options.

Stuff like that doesn’t necessarily matter to everyone.

If that is true, he probably doesn’t feel up for trying to fight it anymore and would rather just walk away. It’s not like he has much else to prove at the NHL level. He can walk away comfortably and be with his family.

I feel for the guy and I wish him all the best.

On the flip side, I can’t say I saw this specific scenario playing out but I was never a fan of this signing and now we’re f***ed with no legit 1-B option to back up Blackwood.

I'd think with that route there's an expectation that he's trying to get better so that he can play again. Maybe he's just done with that stress, since I'm sure it can be draining, and wants to focus on getting better to enjoy retirement with his family instead.
