Right the player price will rise accordingly, provided the amount of total talent supply in the league does not grow.

But you also have to consider that if the cap goes up, more talent from other leagues will be tempted to come over here... guys like Radlulov, ect.

Didnt think about that. Good point.

But you are absolutely right that if the cap is expected to rise, signing deals with long, stable cap hits is the way to go. That almost makes a vet on an 8 year deal a better bargain than new players coming into big RFA contracts. In 10 years, a MDZ might get 4.5-5 million a year right off of his ELC...

I'm not as sold on the idea that the great talent around the world isn't already in the NHL. There are some small, specific examples that stay in the KHL (for instance) for money, but the majority of the guys over there wouldn't significantly add to the talent pool in the NHL; not enough to justify walking away from their current salaries to get a comparable (80%) salary to play in another country as a 4th-liner. And even if it did, the KHL is almost limitless in their funds, and would just adjust their salaries accordingly, in addition to adding the tax break benefits and the like for those players.

While it's a possibility, I don't think most guys will come rolling back over into open arms (Filatov, Burmistrov, Radulov) if the cap was to rise that sharply. Guys like Kuznetsov and Buchnevich might come over a year or two earlier than they normally would have, but it's not as if they are wasting their careers to develop back at home in a men's league, and most expect them to come over after their deals, anyway.

The biggest effects this will have are on the re-capture penalties and UFA salaries. RFA's will still get short-staffed when it comes to the money, as they are cost-controllable, and if teams are having to pony up 6-7 year deals at $9-10 million a year for the Vanek's of the world, that will come out of what the RFA's might get. Teams will still have to be frugal somewhere in order to sign the guys they want, and the only place to be frugal internally is with their own RFA's. The trade values of those RFA's is going to skyrocket far more than it already has, however.

Agree, with the exception of a few homesick Russians the guys that should be here are here or are young and will be or are older and on a retirement tour. Expect an influx of Swiss perhaps. The proportional effect on salaries will be all about the % of the cap a player represents and of course desparate GM syndrome.

Makes you rethink what Hank should get as an example.

Radulov isn't coming back

Chris Johnston wrote this today

It was interesting to note that Ilya Kovalchuk’s salary was listed at $10.3 million in this compilation of top KHL earners by Sports.ru. If true—and two industry sources suggested that the numbers looked legitimate—Kovalchuk is actually receiving $1million less in gross pay from SKA St. Petersburg this season than he was originally owed by the New Jersey Devils. Of course, the income tax rate is much lower in Russia and there are no escrow deductions in the KHL. Also worth noting: Alexander Radulov is believed to be pulling in $7.5 million. Cha-ching.

It goes to show; like I say, that if you can lock up the guys you have grown to long-term contracts, do it.

There should never be any good free agents available if the cap continues to rise like this.

Henrik's 8 million will be a lot less painful in the 8th year of his contract, when the cap is 100 million dollars.

Why hasn't Sather given Lundqvist that contract? The NHL teams know the numbers better than the media.

So you want Richards on the roster for the next 6 years?

Richards has 2 goals in the last 19 games.

if he gets around 60 points i think sather will think twice about buying him out. by the time richards is no longer a 60 point player that cap hit will be less than 10% of the cap. who is replacing richards 60 points in the next few years?

So the Rangers will have a bad contract on their books and he will take up a roster spot. What are you doing with him? Buying him out?

You said the next few years

TEXT CAP HIT BREAKDOWN (for copying and pasting)
Brad Richards buyout from CapGeek.com
2016-17: $500,000
2017-18: $6,500,000
2018-19: $6,500,000
2019-20: $6,500,000
2020-21: $833,333
2021-22: $833,333
2022-23: $833,333
2023-24: $833,333

A 60 point player shouldn't have a cap hit close to $7M. He is on pace for 55 points.

He will 34 in May. He has 2 goals in the last 19 games.

Mirtle projects the 17-18 cap being $84.4M. The Rangers will be playing with a $77.9M cap while their competitors have the full amount if they buy him out. The other alternative is keeping him on the roster.

People give Brassard crap for not producing. Who is he playing with? Give him the minutes next season. JT Miller is a center. Not a winger. The $6,666,667 can be put to better use. Other players will be available. The amnesty buyout is there and it should be used. It should have been used last June.

The only way Richards survives is if he's injured and we cant buy him out.

Replacing an amnestied Richards with another buyout for less term and $$$ ( a la Vinny L) would be optimal IMO. Will be interesting to see if someone becomes available as this is the last chance for such buyouts and I am pretty sure lots of teams may use this opportunity

Do we have a grasp of what names could be available?

That would be great. I assume

G- Lundqvist , Talbot
D- McDonaugh, Staal, Moore stay. After that it's tough to predict with Girardi and Stralman. Del Zotto and Falk are RFA

C- have to assume Richards buyout so maybe go Stepan, Brassard, Miller, Lindberg just to fill in the UFA spots of Boyle and D.Moore?

LW- Kreider and Zuccarello RFA signings, Hagelin and say Kristo in for Pyatt as a UFA

RW- Nash, Callahan RFA signing, Dorsett and say Fast in for Pouliott as a UFA?

Reality is the contracts of Boyle, Poo, Pyatt need to go for cheaper alternatives whether it be internal or bargain UFA's

My main point is that with Hank on his number, lets say we sign

Girardi 6 years 5.5 million per
Callahan 7 years 6 million per
Stralman 4 years 3.5 million per
Del Zotto 1 year 4 million
Kreider 2 years at 2.5 million

And amnesty Brad Richards, where does that leave us capwise for next season?

Using your numbers, we'd have a little over 7 mil left to spend and still need 5 forwards (assuming Miller and McIlrath are on the team). I think both Girardi and Cally will get close to 5 mil and MDZ will get less than 4 mil, assuming he's even still on the team. So let's call it 9 mil total that we have to spend for 5 more forwards.

We can probably fill a spot or two with rookies. Fast, Lindberg, Hrivik. Maybe even Kantor. Or we can bring back Haley or Mashinter for cheap. That would leave between 7 and 7.5 mil for 3 spots. It's doable, but if we are bringing Brassard back, he's going to eat up a good portion of that. The other 2 spots would have to be 1-2 mil per year guys.

If MDZ is traded for a guy like Connolly, we'd be in better shape, but it's so hard to predict what this team is going to do with so many free agents.

No offense to you because you didn't come up with the numbers but that's a terrible team. The bottom six is brutal. The D is too expensive even with trading DZ.
