TOTAL SALARY CAP HIT: $67.17

This is definitely in the ballpark of what we need to do with the cap, which is likely to be in the $68-70 range.

for the most part. I don't think Brassard is going anywhere but could be wrong. I would slide him into that 2nd C spot

I don't think the team changes too much. Let the overpaid 3rd/4th liners go in Boyle(best of the bunch) , Pyatt, Pouliott. Yea sure D.Moore at 1 million again whatever but the main thing is they need Miller Lindberg, Hrvik Fast or Kristo to step up 2 F of that group for sure

Thing is the kids would need atleast 3rd line minutes or they are a waste on the 4th line

No offense to you because you didn't come up with the numbers but that's a terrible team. The bottom six is brutal. The D is too expensive even with trading DZ.

I don't disagree. I'd be okay with trading Girardi or Staal, but I doubt Sather will do it. I'm on the fence regarding Callahan. I love the guy, but he gets hurt a lot and isn't the same player he was a couple years ago.

I am not proposing that this is what we do, more a ballpark of where we stand if we try to keep everyone on the current roster.

I forgot to include Boyle and Zucc, as well. Without dealing someone, we will have a tough time with the bottom 6, and that is even with the Richards buyout.

If Sather doesn't move Girardi or Staal and pays everyone, its the same team. Those are defend first players. What does that accomplish? Sather talked about changing the style of play. They can't play an up tempo style with these players. Why did they fire Tortorella? They should have kept him if they are going to bring back the same group of players for next 5-6 years. Staal isn't the same player after all of the injuries. You look at Staal before the concussion. Not the same player. Then he suffered the eye injury. Girardi looks lost in this system. Vigneault has a 5 year contract. They should have let Nill hire AV for the Stars if they bringing back the same group.

They better pray Richards doesn't get hurt or comes up with one of the injuries which require surgery after the season which prevents a buyout.

There is whiteboard somewhere in the Rangers management office in Greenburgh. I am sure Gorton has run the numbers and scenarios with Sather. Gorton was involved in negotiating the Lundqvist contract. The Rangers wanted to get him signed.

GM Glen Sather said negotiations between him, assistant GM Jeff Gorton and Lundqvist's agent Don Meehan were low-key and friendly.

I don't see any problems with the bottom 6, honestly. I can make a $68m cap work without Richards on the roster and ~$500k to spare pretty easily.

So $71m+ from next season according to the word from the BoG meeting.

Sather is going to be like a kid in a candy store...

I can see Sather not using a 2nd Amnesty on Richards. The cap is going up $7M and will probably keep going up. Heard either Darren Dreger or Bob McKenzie (cant remember which one) say they wouldnt be surprised if the cap goes up to $90M in the next few years.

That being said, if a true #1C becomes available at or around $6.6M per season, Sather should cut ties with Richards

... full of a lot of crappy free agents. Seriously, this is gonna be a minefield for Sather.

Might as well keep Richards. Other option of note is signing Stastny (doesn't have a contract yet and has been doing okay this year, not sure if the Avs are going to re-sign him).

Alright, so at $71.1m, which is the preliminary number that's nearly ALWAYS lower than the final numbers, here's what I got. No Richards buyout and raises where deserved.

(as always, some of these players are placeholders for possible FAs or recalls)

FORWARDS
Chris Kreider ($2.250m) / Derek Stepan ($3.075m) / Rick Nash ($7.800m)
Carl Hagelin ($2.250m) / Brad Richards ($6.667m) / Ryan Callahan ($5.300m)
Mats Zuccarello ($2.500m) / Derick Brassard ($3.700m) / Jesper Fast ($0.805m)
J.T. Miller ($0.894m) / Brian Boyle ($2.500m) / Derek Dorsett ($1.633m)
DEFENSEMEN
Ryan McDonagh ($4.700m) / Dan Girardi ($5.000m)
Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Anton Stralman ($3.200m)
Michael Del Zotto ($3.000m) / John Moore ($1.750m)
Justin Falk ($1.024m) /
GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($8.500m)
Cameron Talbot ($0.563m)
BUYOUTS
Wade Redden ($0.000m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)

Not a ton of room there... but I think one of two things is pretty much 100% to happen: either Richards get bought out or Brassard doesn't get qualified.

The current Richards at 6.6 moving forward seems kind of worth it. Especially in light of Callahan's alleged potential to crack 6M in his next contract. Statsny ought to crack 7M. Pretty sure he's not worth that.

I'm hoping after the next lockout the cap recapture problem is negotiated away. Of course more (favored) teams will also have to be seeking relief (like, say, Chicago).

There will be no cap recapture problem on the next CBA. It only applies to deals that were signed under the last CBA.

And I'm saying that maybe in the next CBA the cap recapture penalty looming from this cba is negotiated out and teams like the Rangers, Chicago etc, with old cap circumventing contracts, dodge the bullet. Longshot for sure but who knows?

Maybe, but it's not going to matter for the Rangers. One way or the other, Richards contract will be completely off the books by then. His deal expires in 2019-20. The earliest the next CBA could take effect is 2020-21, if either side opts out after 8 years. The cap recap would only apply during the years the contract would be active.

A) No, another David Clarkson will not fix anything, and as a matter of fact will produce a fraction of what Richards has produced, even in his HORRIFIC 12-13 campaign

Q) Is Richards worth the risk?
A) Personally, I say yes... Others will say no, but those are my thoughts

With how high the cap is going and will go, I don't see the benefit of buying out Richards.

The risk of keeping him is that he could retire (probably after the 2016-17) and the cap hit would be $5,666,667 for three years after that. I don't really think that's a big deal.

I'd still buy out Richards.

There's no player in next year's FA, maybe, that offers the same impact at 6.6m, but you never know when another Rick Nash or Bobby Ryan is available.

So with Richards almost surely being bought out can that money not go into resigning Cally and Girardi? Also cap is going up

Are people worried about the cap or are they just concerned Girardi and Cally will cost too much?

Question in the lineup will be does the team feel comfortable having Brassard as the 2nd line C. Stepan will be 1 and I'd say Miller is 3. Moore as a number 4 at the same amount of money OR another cheap alternative OR Lindberg. Main thing is 4th line C needs to be a cheap Pker

RW- Nash, Callahan, Zuccarello, Dorsett.............seems good to me.........Fast on call up

LW- Kreider, X- UFA, Hagelin, cheap 4th line option. I'm ok with a Carcillo type if he keeps doing what he's been doing. Pouliott also may be earning himself another contract. Ways to go for that though

I don't see many changes

Richards at 6.67 any given year is fine esp since his production is good, the issue is length of contract and what we get saddled with if he retires.

With the cap going up and up over the next few years, If Richards would agree to wave his no trade clause, can he be traded to a team struggling to reach the cap floor, when his salary is only 1 million for the last 3 years of the contract..and retire on another team....

I believe so and I believe that we can even eat half his salary, issue for another team is that if he retires before the end contract ends then there could be a substantial hit based on his avg cap hit at 6.67. You'll get a better response from one of our more CBA educated posters.
