With all RFAs signed, we can now speculate on next year's cap situation. Here's a quick mock-up I made on capgeek:

This is assuming a $70 million cap. Either way, with the buyout of Richards and the cap going up there will be plenty of room to sign all the key free agents. I think I was being more than generous here with raises. Obviously I don't think they will be playing 3 rookies on the 4th line, but this is just to show that there is plenty of room to sign a few FA's if need be.

Yeah, this is why I'm not even worried about the cap next season even if Richards puts up 90 points this year and we decide not to be him out. We're still going to be fine.

We don't pay Nash like he's a top 5 player. It only seems that way because his contract doesn't fluctuate any. We do pay him like a 1st line player, which he is.

But at the end of the day it isn't a huge amount but still, in a year where the salary cap went down and we have a guy sitting out for a few hundred thousand dollars. You look up and down the roster thats one spot we could have used the savings

Probably because we still own his rights, and he isn't in the AHL. He also may not have officially filed his papers yet.

If you look at the daily tracker, he is counted 14 days on the roster and 5 days as buried. That 5 days is probably the time between when he was sent down and when he decided to retire.

The TV deal wasn't a surprise. The new money comes into play for 15-16 cap. The NHL projected $1B increase in revenue in 3 years during the summer. The Rogers deal is worth $4.9B in US dollars. The cap is determined in US dollars. The first year is worth $300M. It escalates over the 12 years. Its $500M plus at the end. The NHL gets $150M as an upfront payment spread out over the first 2 years. $375M in the first year.

Rogers will pay the NHL $300 million in the first year and will gradually increase to approximately mid-$500 million in the final year. The deal also includes an upfront payment of $150 million spread over the first two years of the contract.

The NHL told teams the cap for 14-15 could be $67M. It could be $70M depending upon which teams advance in the playoffs.

The Canadian teams will get a greater % than the US teams.

Invasion fees are designed to compensate the Canadian teams for the local inventory lost to the national TV deals.

It goes to show; like I say, that if you can lock up the guys you have grown to long-term contracts, do it.

There should never be any good free agents available if the cap continues to rise like this.

Henrik's 8 million will be a lot less painful in the 8th year of his contract, when the cap is 100 million dollars.

With those projections, the salary re-capture penalties will be so much less severe than originally thought that the chances of these players also being traded comes back into the realm of possibility.

So you are just going to see UFA deals go through the freakin roof.

But yes it would be wise to lock in what you can now...as long as you are confident in the projections.

Right the player price will rise accordingly, provided the amount of total talent supply in the league does not grow.

But you also have to consider that if the cap goes up, more talent from other leagues will be tempted to come over here... guys like Radlulov, ect.
