The overall team defense will be a wait and see but the boost in offense this group also provides the forwards should be huge. Getting tape to tape passes from guys like Severson who appear to really excel at it vs forwards coming back and carrying pucks themselves or trying to pick up pucks that have simply been dumped out of the zone is going to be a blessing for guys like Gaudreau and Johnson.

Severson is not a top pairing defenseman. Didn't they have to shelter him in NJ this season?
He wasn't sheltered per se, he was on the 3rd pairing because Dougie is one of the best offensive D-men in the league, Marino exploded for us this season, and he (Damon) provided stability and leadership on the backend due to rookies and garbage Brendan Smith being on the left side.

He's also a very good pk'er and a competent pp2 qb.

This isn't a bad deal for Columbus- even if years 7/8 will be rough - since there was no chance he was going to get less from a better team on the open market.

Most Devils fans would've been very happy to have him back for 2 years but he never would've taken that deal and with Nemec coming up as soon as next season there was no reason to sign him for longer.

He's going to do exceptionally dumb shit occasionally, but overall CB made a good decision and acquired a fine puck moving 2nd pairing RHD who can slot in on the first and not look out of place with a decent partner.

How in earth is a 3rd round pick for someone they had no intention of re-signing to begin with a bad return? You think teams would be flipping a 1st round pick for Severson’s rights?
When I initially saw the headline I figured it was going be a 4th.

I'm happier that it's a 3rd, but it's not as if CB got hosed.

i agree with most of your points.

if the investment of 3rd round pick and 8th year of term was needed to get him signed is the open question.
would severson had multiple options for 7×6.5m?
would another team trading for his ufa rights?

Happy with a third round pick, we were not going to resign him anyway!
