Callahan has an outside chance at a buyout but I think hes more a next year candidate.

Callahan can't be bought out this year due to his injury/surgery, and willing to bet he won't be bought out next year either if he is still an effective bottom 6 forward.

Smith has 2 more years left? Would the Rangers want to tie up a buyout slot for 4 years?
Smith has 3 years left and screwed himself by coming into camp out of shape. Who knows what else went on to warrant the demotion. Fought a teammate in an AHL practice scrimmage.

With a team lacking on defense and no one immediately stepping in, they ride it out another year. Not only will it shorten the buyout, but it will give Smith a chance in a new system to see if he can build some value again.

Thinking Sekera more than likely for the Oilers. Got to think a few under performing veterans may get bought out as well.

If I can take a stab at the bolded... It probably has to do with never really being a good NHL defenseman... Rangers equally screwed themselves giving that contract to a guy who was in and out of the doghouse on the notably bad post-Lidstrom Red Wings defense, including during the season he was traded...

While rebuilding, the Rangers might as well give him another shot and do their best to let the contract end without a buyout, which looks slightly less brutal than Girardi's for one year...

No limit to buy outs. Teams have only 3 retention slots, for keeping salary in a trade, and had only one compliance buy out after the new CBA was established. But there's no limit to regular old buy outs.

Hmmm - I thought I heard somewhere that it was two but I may have been thinking of old post lockout buyouts.

Thanks for the clarification!

Why waste time....Lucic. You can't teach speed.

theres always been faster teams and slower teams

the canadiens in the 1970s were fast
the oilers in the 1980s were fast

fast teams have been dynasties in the past... but slower players with special traits have still been game changers

when lucic starts crushing people the fast waterbugs will stop skating. the game will slow down

he sucked half a season last year... my guess he got a nagging injury... the team fell out of contention...he thought to himself why fight through the injury to play physical when it wont matter? then the slump hit... his confidence fell... he got some bad luck... fans turned on him

he will still have games in future where he dominates BUT even in his best years he only played great around 50% of the time

this isnt a guy that shows up during meaningless games very often. to be physical hurts... it requires pain. lucic has always been a big game player

oilers are the wrong team for him. they dont have enough depth or leadership to carry passengers.

someone will be happy they trade for him imho... but not at his full salary

he should never have gotten longterm deal at 6 mill

oilers will end up eating some salary... and lucic will become a very good player at the reduced caphit

There's very little chance he's with us after the 18-19 season. Unless he has a renaissance and gets to 40 point levels or the cap goes up so much that him being a nearly 6mil 4th liner isn't an issue, he won't be here. We have better and cheaper options waiting for a spot and we will need to open up roster and cap space. A trade would be best but a buyout is still very likely.
