On a day when the hope was to land a #1 D, but the best we could come up with was Brian Boyle?

Let the debate about ownerships willingness to spend resume.

There were no #1 defensemen available, and we made competitive offers for the best defensemen available, so not sure what their is to debate?

I am not expecting to be in the cup finals this season. So I look for Improvement. IMO Boyle is an improvement, getting rid of Cammy and DSP was an improvement. Letting Bennett go was an improvement. Three of these improvements just open space, improve the cap position and rid us of players that won't help us stay status quo. It's early I believe in Shero trying to make the right moves. I hope we keep Kovy for a year if he is coming back. For now I just want to see an improvement. For me last year was not an improvement.

Go Devils.

This is part of my frustration.

People were arguing full steam to bring in Shatty, over pay, who cares about years 6-7, but now I have to hear there were no big time d-men out there. Or we made a competitive offer, what else could we do?

Try and sign Shattenkirk without grossly overpaying, which we did. That's the best we could do in free agency, and it's better to sign no one than to horribly overpay for players just because you can.

Don't see it happening. I think Kovy goes back to Russia and good riddance.

Surprised the Devils would pay so much for someone who has never even played for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. /s

I think the signing is fine. It is alright. It is okay. Thanks for reading my analysis.

Lol Boyle is a 4C. Nothing more. He does not add grit and toughness just because he is 6ft6.

Fine signing, but many of you are drastically over rating what he is.

he will bring leadership, sandpaper, some penalty killing, and be the 4C. We need these things.

that IS who he is. Have you ever watched him before?

Who is "overrating" what he is? No one is expecting him to be on the 1st line or anything

Clearly you haven't if you think he brings sandpaper.

This. He is a fantastic guy to have in the locker room especially with such a young team. I wouldn't be shocked if he wore an A on his sweater.

Hated it at first due to knee jerk anti rangers bias

starting to like it. Our forwards corps is looking more respectable now with this and MoJoJoJo

Don't see how you can complain, a Blandisi-Boyle-Noesen line is a pretty decent 4th for this year while we arent set to compete, and then a wood-boyle-RW line next season will be fantastic to have wood learn from him after marinating a bit in the AHL this season and then being a call up

Do you have to put a negative spin on every move the team makes? No one is overrating him, he's a 4th line center and one of the most dependable 4th line centers in the league. That's who we signed and everyone seems to be satisfied with that except you. Would you prefer we have Josefson back there this season?

On a per minute basis, Boyle is 168th among forwards in G/60 over the last 4 seasons. Now that'll probably decline in New Jersey both because he will be playing with Miles Wood and because he turns 33 this year, but that's better than your average 4th line center for sure, and certainly a lot better than the Devils have had the last few seasons.

I think he will be the perfect mentor for Wood
