I think that having a play-in round for 4 teams, while the other 14 sit idle might be bad idea.

VI's "play for next year" idea can happen at the same time as the playoffs. That's why I liked it. I'm not super attached or anything though

Van's original idea of having the bottom team in each conference miss out while having their own bronze cup and having an option to pick their draft position in 2023 is my overall preference given we have a weird # at 18.

I added the slightly tweaked draft clock and updated the allowed traded total per GM to 8 as agreed upon a few days ago in the rules portion.

Going to edit in the GM list now...

A similar idea I'd be open to discussing would be to choose draft position in reverse order of how each GM finished in the previous year's ATD. So teams who didn't make the playoffs get first choice of draft position, then teams who were out in the first round, etc. with the previous year's Champion getting last choice.
First time GMs could be ahead of everyone.
For GMs that didn't participate the prior year but have participated in other years, we could just use their result from the last ATD they were in (with any ties in their favor, i.e. a 1st round exit 3 years ago chooses ahead of 1st round exit last year)
Co-GMs get placed basis the higher finish between the two

Seniority could be used as a tie-breaker.

I regret that I have but one 'like' to give that post.

By the way, if, in-the-future, we actually want to encourage newcomer participation, then f*** that "top-4-protected" shit.

Here's a thought-experiment... in this [18 team] draft, would you rather pick 4th, or pick at the ass-end of the snake? [That is- 18-19, or 17-20?] My 5am review of the data suggests that neither a Mario Lemieux build nor a Bobby Hull build has ever won it all. I think I'd take my chances with the tail, rather than have pick #4. (It would seem that even a Bobby Orr build has never finished on top- though I don't have to think too hard for me to recall a Bobby Orr build [or two] that deserved a better fate than it received.)

So far we have @MXD @Dennis Bonvie @Batis @bobholly39 @blogofmike @DannyGallivan willing to vote. I gave them all the particulars (draft length, sequence, master bio thread for info on players, etc) and answered a few questions.

With everyone's kind permission, please allow me to take my place on the non-player voting panel. I briefly thought of doing the 'Sturminator' thing and tuning out and having the final roster-panels sent to my without names... but truth is, I have too much fun just following along with the draft to wish to do that. Besides (especially if my schedule clears somewhat), I might be able to take lists.

Had some likes last night on the conferences, bottom team from each play in a bronze cup series, and get to pick their draft position next year (pick 5 through whatever we end up with) outside the top 4.

Keeps it pretty simple and does give an incentive to give it another go next year for those 9 seeds.

That's the standard way to do it. Changing it now would be unethical since we know where people are.
