Scared what his next deal is gonna look like after this season. Would’ve been nice to lock him in at 3-4 years around 2.5M prior to this season. Now he’s gonna be in the 4M+ AAV.

Copp is a Swiss Army Knife...

He can play a pure defensive role and he does very well, but he's also scored at a decent clip when he's played with skill. This is why @garret9 and I have been screaming for years about how he deserves a shot in the top 6.

As is, his scoring rates have been near identical to Little's since the start of 2018-19. They've dropped a bit when he's played with the likes of Lowry and Tanev, but they've jumped to legit 1st line levels when he's played with the likes of Roslovic and Ehlers.

I hope he gets to stick with skill when PLD enters the lineup, because he's the kind of player that you can use in a 1st or 2nd line role, to really deepen your lineup.

I have been gushing about Copp for years too and was livid when we arbed him.

Thrilled he is thriving in the top 6. What he bring to our top FINALLY is balance. A guy that can actually defend at a high level. What a refreshing change of pace and yes he can still play very well on the offense end.

This is why freakin Vegas almost won a cup. Every team has diamonds that are totally underutilized or miscast.

I Love how Laine called Andrew Copp a star out of anyone on the Jets in his interview, Way to go Copper!! Having Scheifele, Dubois, Connor, Ehlers, Wheeler and now a 6th true high end player in Copp. He has really made this team deeper and helps Chef on the 1st line a lot more then KC did in my opinion!!! Add in a bottom 6 of Stastny, Perreault, Appleton, Harkins, Lowry, Lewis, extras Vesalainen , Gus and Thompson looks awesome to me! Go Jets Go!

What interview was this in?

What do people think of Andrew Copp now? The last post on this thread was about a month ago.

I have always liked his defensive play and the solid effort he puts in every shift. Dude has a real set of stone hands, though.

I personally think he'll be gone to Seattle but, if not, I'd try to sign him for 3 years at 3-3.5 million.

Copp is one of my favourite players but he appears to be battling through something right now. His speed seems a bit off.

Yeah - I really like him, he brings a lot to the table in all areas of the ice, but his hands are just not at a top 6 level. That's fine. Problem is, another team will pay him more than we will for what he is.

Ah yes, when a Chevy pick works out it's always "good drafting". When they bust, it's never bad drafting, just "drafting kids that age is such a crapshoot". :sarcasm:

Same can be said in reverse around here. How many times has it been written here that Chevy can’t draft outside the first round? Scores of times.......lots of examples proving that wrong.

Kind of interesting that outside of McDavid, all those players have very similiar styles of play
xG is highly based on shot location (among other things). closer you are to the net = higher xG you accumulate per shot attempt. Galalgher, Lee, Tkachuk are often top guys since their shot distance is closer to the net, tips, dirty areas etc.

Its time to give Andrew Copp and his future some serious thought.

He earned some top 6 time earlier this year and performed well. His scoring was understandably higher than his usual, more TOI, more skilled line-mates. But now he is back on the 3rd line and continuing to score at a top 6 pace. 12-18-30 in 39 games. That is a 63 pt pace. He hasn't surrendered much, if any defensive play to do it. He plays on PK1 and PP2. He is a perfectly competent centre as well as LW and could probably handle RW quite well too.

A little while ago I put him forward as the logical one to lose in the XD, based on the assumption that he will go to UFA ASAP. We would only have him for 1 more year. But that would still be very poor value, poor asset management, unless Seattle gave us something pretty damn good for us to expose him.

I think the first option should be to keep him, if possible. The questions are, will he sign here if he is offered the right contract, or is he set on going UFA? If he can be kept here, what will it cost? Will that be too much? Knowing who his agent is, I expect him to make the most of this career season. Are we willing to pay for several years of '21 Copp and get several years of '20 Copp? I've been thinking 4x4 would be fair. Maybe it should rise to 4x4.5. But Overcharge may be able to get 5 or 6 years at 5 mil or more. Or believe he can, which is what matters.

The season he is having may just be pricing him too high, or too long, or both. If that is the case, I don't think we should hang on to him as an own rental for 1 year. For one thing, that would mean exposing Apples to Seattle. Lose Apples and then a year later lose Copp. :thumbd: So, either let Seattle pay up and take him, or trade him to some other team. He would be "coach's porn" to Barry Trotz and I think Lou would like him too. Maybe we could put together a package that would spring one of their top 2 RHD. That may be wishful thinking, but we could make a pretty strong offer.

Regardless of which approach we take, we need to acknowledge that Copp has elevated himself to a higher tier. We need to value him accordingly and take some action.

A Copp trade probably works for everyone involved. He's not quite top 6 material, but I can see him getting a 2C role on some teams. He's got leadership, work ethic, etc. Seattle might try and trade for him as he's young enough to be safely signed for a few years and veteran enough to wear a letter. Wouldn't lose him for nothing though, so should probably trade ahead of the XD.

Personally I'd rather keep Copp over Lowry (to compare similarly deployed guys), but I think this org is going to keep Lowry long-term.

Losing an Overhardt guy before he holds out and hampers the team next season and has the fan base turn on him is also a benefit.
