Usually I have to take a coach's scouting report with a grain of salt, but additional info about Quillan:

Pecknold sees Quillan as potential shutdown center in the mold of Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal.

"He'll be a great penalty killer, 200-foot player," Pecknold said. "A big thing for him is he brings it every game. Very detailed, does a lot of things well."

It would be incredible if the Devils could pull off both. I’d love some competition going into next year for the bottom-six.

Looks like Quinnipiac is headed to the tournament so earliest both would be available would be end of March. Regardless, Devils will likely still have some cap space to burn. Could sign and carry more than 23 players and then rotate those guys in if they need a couple more depth options up front.

Elite Prospects released their CHL Free Agency guide w/ 20 skaters (4 defensemen) & 5 goalies on Tuesday and these fellas have already been snapped up.

#4

Not Ranked but on my list of possible centers, so it’s not surprising that the f***ing Blue Jackets signed him.

You don't have to be mad, we would trade him for goon anyway. Even 69iq GM would like to act like that.

How aren’t we on this? Is Fitzgerald on vacation?
He gets in on it after everyone is already gone. He has done the same thing with centers for all 3
pre-seasons with Utica and forwards the last 2.

He's always working on something else for the big club (Bratt's contract/ Meier acquisition/contract/Toffoli, etc.) and apparently no other person in management is allowed to do these other things and then simply seek his okay before just doing it.

The top guys sign with same few clubs. We might be making offers that get turned down.

We ideally need to move into the group that attracts the top FAs, and the team needs to all they can to make that happen, but you can’t be surprised Tampa and the Calder Cup winning Caps organization snap up guys first.

Hockey Zone write ups

Diotte is in his second year of National League draft eligibility and we feel that he should have been drafted last year. He is a player who does not have a ton of penalty minutes, but we have seen him deliver crushing body checks as well as seen him go out of his way to get an opponent back who he feels has wronged him or a teammate. The 6’3″ 205 pound righty is very comfortable playing on the left or the right side and defensively has no issues with forcing opposing forwards early in the neutral zone and making body contact at his defensive blueline. Diotte is a willing shot blocker who will get big low to block shots, especially while killing penalties.

QMJHL: Drummondville vs Gatineau, January 2021: The righty played primarily on the left side and looked very comfortable. Defensively Diotte’s gaps were tight through out the neutral zone and he pinched off even man line rushes early. We’ve noted throughout our viewings that he takes smart angles while ending the cycle and tonight was no different. His stick placement forced Gatineau’s forwards onto their backhands and Diotte quickly attacked forcing turnovers. In transition he worked to be an outlet for his partner showing a prepared stick for receiving passes. Diotte delivered a crushing body check 4 minutes into the second period and seemed to be much more engaged physically from that point on.

QMJHL: Drummondville vs Gatineau, November 2020: Defensively Diotte played a simple direct game. His stick was consistently in shooting or passing lanes and he showed a willingness to block shots. He battled to eliminate the cycle quickly and showed lower body power while pinning forwards to the boards. He had an incredible nine takeaways vs one giveaway during his eighteen minutes of ice time. He continued to move the puck with hard accurate passes in transition, but we would like to see him stay off his backhand when making passes near his defensive blueline.

QMJHL: Drummondville vs Sherbrooke, September 2020: Diotte moved the puck quickly and generally controlled the pace of play while he was on the ice. His lateral mobility allowed him to defend with tight gaps and defensively his stick was excellent. There were a few times that he forced stretch passes which turned into turnovers at the far blueline, but he showed nice deception as he viewed the entire ice surface looking to make plays. This was a nice game for Diotte to build on.

Quebec Midget AAA Challenge, January 2019: Solid showing here all week for Diotte as his consistent steady play makes him essential to his teams’ success. Has a solid skating base and knows when to pinch in the offensive zone on forwards who are vulnerable on the walls. Nothing stands out about his play but he is a defenseman every coach wants on his team because you know you are getting a simple, effective game out of him.

Drummondville Midget Espoir Tournament, December 2017: The top scoring D man for Quebec white, Diotte finished the tournament with 2 assists in 4 games. He’s a good skater who always has his feet moving. He jumps into the rush a lot. He needs to be smarter about picking his spots. Often times his jump in the rush leaves the team vulnerable on the counter attack and forces his partner into odd man rushes. Grade: C+

The Devils are short on RHD in their system with nothing coming to remedy that. They could use forwards but RHD is also a pretty immediate need for Utica.

Wednesday Prospect Results

Cam Squires had 1 goal (got a real good bounce as the defender tapped it into his own net) , he was a -1 with 3 shots on goal and went 0/1 in the faceoff dot in the Eagles 7 to 4 win. It is a bit disappointing that he only put up that 1 somewhat lucky goal when his team through up 7 goals but it is what it is.

Cole Brown was a -1 with 2 PIM and went 0/1 in the faceoff dot in the Bulldog's 5 to 1 loss. Very meh stat line as usual for him. The Bulldogs sit on top of their respective conference in the standings but are 5th overall in the OHL. The Western Conference is stacked with 4 teams ahead of them. London and Saginaw have roughly 10 more wins than the Bulldogs, pretty good gap in the win totals. Hopefully Brantford can put a good run together as we know the best team doesn't always win the big prize in the playoffs.

Josh Filmon had 1 secondary assist, was +1 with 5 shots on goal & went 0/1 in the faceoff dot in the Broncos 8 to 2 win. Glad they got the win but it's similar to Cam Squires game tonight where they didn't have multipoint games in a blowout win...

I think it is safe to say we absolutely need to draft a forward with our first round pick. Gritsyuk, Filmon, Squires & Hameenaho are good ones, but we need a blue chipper and more importantly a center.

I’m quoting myself like a lunatic because during all the TDL madness Dallas snapped up one of the 20 Skaters on the 2024 Elite Prospects CHL Free Agency Guide.

It was #13, LHD Connor Punnett

So, the FA CHL signings so far:
#4 Zac Funk, W - Washington

#11 Gabriel Szturc, C - Tampa
#13 Connor Punnett, LHD - Dallas
NR - Max McCue, C - Columbus
