Really wishing we had used our 7th on Turkulainen instead of O'Connell, kid seems to have taken another step and is really lighting it up despite his size. I imagine with a big WJC it would take a much higher pick this draft.

Another solid overage opportunity could be shaping up in Marcus Sylvegard. Playing with Elvenes in Alvenskan, and while his SuperElit numbers were nothing eye popping 6 points in 7 games between U18 and early U19 is definitely intriguing.

Odds of him being there at our pick?
No idea, so many variables to that question. I would be surprised at the moment if he lasted until the playoff teams, someone will fall in love, throw caution to the wind and overlook his flaws.

I'm all for BPA but I'm definitely hoping another Dman falls into our lap. I'm also of the belief that you draft a goalie in every draft, doesn't matter where. Eventually you'll find one. I don't feel as nervous as others about the G prospect situation though, goalies aren't hard to find. There's always a few teams looking to move a good one and although it'll cost you a few picks, it's still the least costly position to fill around the nhl. Other than a few elite ones, There's just not much separating goalies anymore in the nhl which brings their value down.

Sylvegård is a decent player but needs to improve his skating.

Central Scouting Released their watch list, grading players with A (1st round), B (2nd/3rd round), and C (4th, 5th and 6th round) to indicate what rounds they think they project to go in. There was also an accompanying article by Mike Morreale of NHL.com.

List: https://nhl.bamcontent.com/images/assets/binary/291529698/binary-file/file.pdf

Article: https://www.nhl.com/news/rasmus-dahlin-among-players-to-watch-for-2018-nhl-draft/c-291520870

Quick commentary on the list but if Leafs took Akil Thomas or Ryan McLeod over Jack McBain, stuff would be broken in my household.

Also, saw this post by Leafs head scout in Sweden and thought it was worth posting here.

so according to that file, there are 24 "A" players. Is that an indication that its a shallow (ish) draft there isn't 31 "A" or 1st round picks players available?. As it currently stands of course, players can work there way into and out of "A" I assume

Yeah, I don't know. But, I do not think this draft is shallow, its much better than last year. Although, I personally believe that most drafts are defined by the top 10, and how the draft folds out after that tends to be fairly equal, outside of years that are extreme outliers like 2003 (in a good way) or 1999 (in a negetive way).

Do you think Evan Bouchard is a level higher than Xavier Bouchard or Woo

Can someone explain where the players come from for the draft? I know it's not like NFL and players come from NCAA so where do players come from and what is the eligibility situation?

Anyone who plays pro-hockey and was born between September 16th 1999 to September 15th 2000, is a first time eligible. Older players can re-enter the draft if undrafted the previous 2 years, and players who didn't sign with their team out of the CHL after 2 years are re-entered.

The players come from a variety of sources. The primary source of talent is the CHL. A bunch comes from European Men's leagues or their junior affiliates. For the United States, late Birthdays (Sept 16th to December 31st) tend to come from the NCAA. But, they come from a variety of other sources such as the United States National Team Development Program, the USHL, and Minnesota High School Hockey.

Players can come from less common sources, but those would be the primary ones.

A highlight montage for Jack McBain ..., who plays Center position with the 2017-18 Toronto Jr. Canadiens.., in the OJHL (#19),..
and also with Canada's U18 team (#20 & #19).., in International Juniors..

Jack was originally drafted in the first round of the OHL 2017 Draft.., but has decided to to stay in the GTMMHL for the 2017-18 season..
and plans to go to Boston College and play in the NCAA, for the 2018-19 season...

He skates really well, for a larger body.. and appears pretty sound both offensively and defensively.., imo.. If he continues to grow, his size may make him very lucrative to a lot of teams, in the upcoming NHL Draft..
He is also starting off with a strong season.. I could see him possibly moving up from his present Draft position(s) ..

So who are we liking for pick 31? :D

All else being equal I'm hoping for either a centre, dman, or big winger.

So far based on what I've read I'm interested in McBain, Hayton, Wahlstrom (all unlikely), Woo, E Bouchard, Samuelsson, Kotkaniemi, Groulx, Macdonald,

I'm starting to think Wahlstrom might start making noise as a top 3 pick. Especially if people see a future for him as a center. It'd be crazy considering he was hyped at a very young age due to his shootout goal during an intermission at TD Garden.

I have no real preference, I expect us to be a playoff team, and at that point you have to go BPA. The odds of a pick making it in the 16-31 range as a legit NHLer who can contribute to your team is less than 50%, it'd be stupid to put more restrictions by focusing specifically on one type of player.

Of guys who I continually see ranked below 15, I'd be curious about Barrett Hayton who could be a Horvat type talent. I like Woo as a solid all around-guy, who probably lacks #1 upside but can be a very solid #2/3. K'Andre Miller is a very intriguing gamble due to his raw tools.

Yeah, I think Wahlstrom could jump into the top 10 if he shows more consistency. He looked good at the U18 though.

As for my preference it's more of if the talent is equal scenario. Luckily though this particular draft seems to be deep in defensemen and at least nominal centers.

Miller sounds interesting kind of like a better Greenaway. I really like Woo as an all-around defenseman, game manager type.

What do you think of the Swedish "centers" Ollofsson and Lundestrom?

Miller sounds interesting kind of like a better Greenaway. I really like Woo as an all-around defenseman, game manager type.

What do you think of the Swedish "centers" Ollofsson and Lundestrom?
Haven't seen enough of either of them to have a solid opinion. Not sold on either from what I've seen.

I think Wahlstrom will be top 10 in most list. HockeyProspect.com bumped him up to 8, and I can see him rising higher. Strong start to the season. He's a solid kid with good skating and amazing hands, big question is he a center or a winger.

I think Zavgorodny will start to slip. I don't think he's a legit 5'9 from what I've heard. McShane could be this years Suzuki (undersized guy with nothing spectacular so he is reliant on IQ). McLeod I don't like, he's worse than his brother who I wouldn't have taken in the top 20.

I'm really curious about Boqvist's stock. Wihtout a standout WJC, it will be hard to stay a top 10 guy if he's in J-20 all year, and he may not have the size to play SHL.

If Boqvist fell that would be awesome, but he probably doesn't make it to the botton quintile of the draft where we'll be picking anyway.

I like the depth of this draft compared to its top end which works perfectly for us.
