The Draft Analyst | 2018 NHL Draft Report is on sale!

This is the third draft report I've done but by far the most detailed.

For $5.00 (PayPal/Dropbox PDF) you get:

— About 200 scouting reports on the top draft-eligible players (Top-150 ranked, other notables and 30 or so overagers)

— Draft previews for all 31 teams, updated key prospect lists and three needs with possible draft targets.
— Final 500 Rankings, Final 150 overagers, Top-50 for each position
— A full seven-round mock draft with player descriptions for all 217 picks
-- Complete draft order (as of yesterday)
-- 2-round mock draft with notes on each pick

Let me know if you have any technical issues.

We generally don’t let people advertise products on HFBoards, but this is a case where I’m willing to provide an unpaid endorsement.

I’ve bought this the past couple of years and it’s fantastic value for $5. Basically the same quality of content you get for $20 from an off-the-rack magazine, minus the glossy pictures. If you’re a hardcore draft guy it’s worth adding to your pool of info, and if you’re less hardcore this guide is all you need on draft day.

Now to get rid of the wife and kids so I can actually read something other than kids books, and instructions on how to put together a bookshelf.

I swear to all that is holy that if we're talking about Jack Hughes before Christmas, I'm moving to North Korea.
But what if we acquire the Senators 2019 pick from the Avalanche for Skinner+?!

Now that I think about it, the Duchene trade has a good chance at being worse than the Toronto-Boston Kessel trade. Yikes.

So, in terms of what I think we might be able to do in this draft, excluding trades, this is probably the direction I'd go for a full mock:

#2 - RW Andrei Svechnikov - Barrie, OHL
obvious selection here, absolute no-brainer

#42 - RHD Jacob Bernard-Docker, Okotoks, AJHL - UND bound for 2018-19
not on a ton of peoples radars but he's a decent sized dman with a big shot. Not quite as dynamic as Dude Where's Makar from last years draft, but no doubt he'd be a first rounder if he played in the WHL this past season.

#96 - C Alexander Khovanov, Moncton, QMJHL
He's ranked a bit all over the map this year but his skill is undeniable, may not be a available here but if he is we should be all over it

#104 - G Veini Vehvilainen - Karpat, FEL
strange to take a 4th year eligible goaltender here but it's a risk that needs to be taken at this point, he was elite for Karpat this past year and could make the jump immediately.

#166 - LHD Michael Callahan - Youngstown, USHL - Providence bound for 2018-19
Didn't put up much in the way of numbers this past season but his game reads exactly like other members of the clone army heading in to this draft year, and he reportedly has a lot of untapped offensive potential with a booming point shot.

#197 - LW Demetrios Koumontzis - Edina, Minn-HS - Arizona State bound for 2018-19
Undersized but high upside offensive winger, this is a weak Minnesota HS class but he may be the best prospect from it

#216 - G Jordan Kooy - London, OHL
Backup for the Knights, but he was named 2nd team all-rookie in the OHL this past year and is one of the youngest goalies in this draft, will take over as starter for London for the next 2 years starting next season.

Yes, on taking Vehvilainen with our 104 pick, or we may lose him now that he's getting attention. There was a small post that the Canes wanted to sign him already, but because of his age, he had to go through the draft first. Now he seems to have attracted a lot of attention, since entering the draft. I will be pissed if we don't get him now. Kinda not fair that he has already passed thru 2 drafts with no one taking him, yet we can't just sign him.

I wish we had another 2nd, and retained our third, cuz I really like a few guys like Jacob Lauko L/C, Filip Johansen Rt D, and Kyle Topping C that we will not be in the running for with only 1 pick betw 1st and 4th round.

My choice would be Lauko. He is considered one of the fastest skaters in the draft. If he develops other NHL-level skills, he could be the ideal LW for Necas/Svechnikov in 3 years. What's more, I really expect the Canes to draft at least one Czech player who is eligible for Charlotte. Because if Necas ends up starting the season on the Checkers it would make his transition much easier to have someone else who speaks his language, etc. For that reason, I also like Zabransky in the 4th round. Or in the 7th the towering defenseman Jakub Adamek might be an option.

I can't embed from the Twitter, but the Canes put out a "you should get to know Svechnikov, some people say he's going #2 ;);)" this afternoon.

If they're trying to leave any drama to this, they're doing it very poorly.

He probably just stepped into the restroom.
Man, I hope our Southern food sat on his stomach okay.

J/k I read an article that TD brought him to a sushi restaurant in Raleigh; hardly Southern cuisine.

Bernard-Docker doesn't sound Finnish. Because we all know if he isn't a Fin, this ain't happening.

I'm barely up to speed on 1st round picks and most of the time have no clue who the guy is when they are taken in the 2nd+ rounds.

In the last 10 years, the only players the Canes have selected in the 2nd-7th round that I had even heard of before the Canes took them was Dumoulin, Faulk, McGinn, Roy and Wesley. Every other player they took I had no clue who they were so I rely on the likes of DaveG, Vagrant and others to be wrong about them for me. :D

I want Khovanov because I heard he’s good friends with Svechnikov, is a Center, and has a questionable ceiling due to missing half of last year. I also liked Matthias Samuelsson a lot at the WJC but I doubt he makes it to the Canes 2nd.

I want Vehvilainen and Annunen because they are Karpat and also goalies.

Khovanov makes a lot a sense. I would like that pick also.
