VS and Hronek for sure the highlights of the period.

Don't forget Machovsky. :)

I'm finally able to relate to the positive opinion of Nelson. Read some of his post-game comments from this tourney and thought they were perfectly worded. Pulling Holmstrom off the top line was an intelligent move, he's had a better game tonight. Seems like a great coach destined to return to the NHL at some point.

I mean, what is location, really
Cholowski is sort of a puck movement specialist, so I knew he was going to be very good in that department. What's surprised me a lot is Hronek looks like his equal this game. Skating just as well, passing just as well... and maybe even better.

Cholowski is definitely more consistent with it, though, that's for sure.

What's the difference with Hronek on the first game vs. third game?

Different partner? Was with Sulak at first game...

That's the main thing, consistency. Cholowski is more stable and consistent at this stage.

Hronek is going to need some taming in GR to work out when he can manifest that offensive flair. Definitely don't want him to lose any of it, the flair and tenacity is what makes him potentially deadly.

Hronek played with Cholowski this game. But also his play was simply better, especially defensively. He was more composed with the puck, too. Made much better passes.

It might have also helped that the NYR were really, really out of sorts this game. Tons of turnovers and a pretty anemic forecheck most of the game.

I love seeing so many changing their opinions on Cholowoski. This time last year Wings management was getting roasted by damn near everyone for that pick. Like Rasmussen I believed it was a better pick than the Red Wings got credit for. I suspect opinions on Rasmussen will have a similar change over the next year. Conversely, I've never been as high on hronek/VS as the concensus around here. I guess a lot of this comes down to my viewing opportunities of the west coast kids and lack there of with the central kids.

Either way I'm looking forward to seeing what the young dman can do in the AHL this year and I'll try to post regularly about Ras and Cholo (assuming he is in the Dub). Regardless of how they turn out I'm pumped two of the Wings top prospects will be in my neck of the woods.

Watching a prospect game on mobile makes it difficult to get a read on these kids. As a general comment it seem the flow was balanced when our top guys were on the ice but was tilted towards the Red Wings net when the lower lines stepped out.

This tournament isn't going to change my opinions of anyone, negative or positive, tbh. :dunno:

I've always liked Cholowski. :)

Plays a cerebral game. Simple, smart, composed and effective. Impressive skater, with his added size/no loss of mobility and terrific work ethic, he'll play in the NHL.

Top pairing? Unlikely, but he has the skillset to be an effective partner for a Dahlin type player.

I dunno, he looks good moving the puck, but he still has to be better than the guys the Wings could have taken in his place. I'm still a little unconvinced when it comes to offensive upside. Can he be a PP guy? Is he going to be able to score goals? As good as he looked in the neutral zone, he didn't look nearly as good in the offensive zone.

My guess is it's just settling their nerves. I'm sure having the organizations eyes on you in person is intimidating. It's also still summer. Hronek and VS were playing like madmen. In game one I saw this amazing play: an opponent was racing down the wing...instead of simply backing up Saarijarvi charged at him, stopped in an instant, then backpedaled so fast he nearly caught the guy. It was an unbelievable show of skating ability but completely unnecessary!

Svechnikov is a little too quiet for my liking. :(

Lane Zablocki is showing a lot of composure as an 18 year old. May be the next little Bert?

Damn I so agree with the posts about Cholowski. He's the one player that's almost identical in 9 periods of hockey, really consistent.

I just felt the narrative last year was not reflective of what we had and it seems much more reasonable this year. And honestly he doesn't need to become Erik Karlsson for me to be happy with the pick. If he can score 30+ points and effectively play 22 minutes a night I'll be pumped. Hell, if Cholo-Hronek/VS can be a pairing in the mold of Vlasic/Martinez-Krug I'd be very happy.

All of that said I too question how high end his offence can be. That's why, aside from my own vested interest, I believe the Dub is the best place for him. He can get a ton of reps on the top power play refining his offensive prowess. I think much of the skill set is already there and it's more about cultivating creativity and patience with the puck at this point and Junior hockey will be a much better place for him to do that.

Yeah, I can see what you mean. There's got to be a little bit of sheepish coming down from the ledge. I was one of those posters who were absurdly down on Cholowski. I think we're at more of a middle ground now.

I'd love to see him in the dub. It would be a great place for him to develop in his areas of weakness, like you said. Tougher defensive minutes and prime PP time. I'm concerned that playing in the AHL would just leave him sheltered, especially defensively, which isn't in his best interests.

Hronek was very good moving the puck in Saginaw last year and has always been a very good skater. I don't see his play in this tournament as particularly reveling as you do in this regard.

As between Cholo and Hronek, I think Hronek is more naturally skilled with the puck on his stick and will probably be a bit more productive offensively (though I can see Cholo contributing to transition offense both on the outlet and as a trailer)He is also a more aggressive risk-taker with the puck. I think Cholo has a certain efficiency to his puck movement that Hronek may never have because of this. While Cholo may not be as skilled with the puck, I do think that he is smart enough and good enough with the puck to support and play with more skilled players outside of specialty teams.
