Wasn't Saarela originally touted as a first rounder, but injuries decreased his stock?

I think it was something about multiple concussions a few years back. He must have been in his mid teens when he got his head rocked. I wonder if that is better, worse, or no difference when it comes to head injuries. I can see why it concerned people and his stock dropped.

I'd be inclined to think it would be a better thing that he was younger...more resilient one would think. Still, I've seen studies that vary in terms of supporting that with evidence. Some say it's easier to recover at a younger age. Some disagree. It's a very individual thing.

I do think that the younger you are, the more likely doctors are to take precautions due to age. I still think some NHL players are back on the ice way too soon. I'm glad the NHL is stepping up their attempts to diagnose, treat, and prevent TBIs.

I have one friend who's in her mid-20s and has had multiple concussions (once you have one, it's easier to get another). She's had multiple strokes and suffers from partial paralysis as a result. It's terrible when it goes badly.

Anyway, on topic, I'm excited about Saarela. He's having a good season right now. I wonder if I'm wrong for expecting a little more out of Bernhardt. I don't think I'm wrong for expecting more out of Halverson. Huska looks like he's off to a nice start, too. Finally starting to gain a semblance of a farm again.

Finally starting to gain a semblance of a farm again.

Early after being drafted, things always look best because the opposition is usually weak and expectations low.

Let's see what Saarela does once he presumably moves on to Sweden, Huska to college, others to the AHL/ECHL.

Unless we stumble upon another Butcher/Duke/Rambo/Graves/Skapski draft in late rounds, the farm won't be rebuilt until the draft where we have a first rounder.

Shesterkin got called back up to the KHL after one game in the VHL. Skrynnik back from the KHL to the VHL. Looks like Ska has too many goalies, and they are rotating their two young guys (Shesterkin and Skrynnik) playing them one game in the VHL and then letting them practice in the KHL with the big boys. It's not the worst way to bring up a young kid to the second-best league in the world.

Ska seems to have a dilemma on who to prioritize. On the one hand, Shesterkin is almost 4.5 years younger with much higher potential. But he'll almost certainly try to leave for the NHL to see if he can make it in the big show. Skrynnik, however, is very unlikely to leave Russia and could be a useful backup for the team for years to come.

Shestyorkin finally named starting goalie Vs. Sochi HC.

About time.

He gave up 1 goal on 10 shots in the first. Guy walked through like 3 players and with a quick release beat Shestyorkin just over the pad, under the blocker.

Igor now at 17 saves on 19 shots, with the second goal being a breakaway. I'd say he's doing his job.

Shesterkin won the game 3-2 in the OT, so his GAA for this game is under 2.00. He faced 32 shots, stopping 30 of them so his SV% in his first KHL outing this season is .938%.

I couldn't watch the game because of work, but statistically that seems like a very good game by Shesterkin. I'll take 30 saves on 32 shots any day of the week.

SKA wins it in OT, after being outworked in the third period. Shestyorkin with 30 saves out of 32 shots against. Kept them in for the most part.

He'll be sticking around in the KHL for the time being.

Awesome for Shesterkin to grab the win in his first game in the KHL this season, and put up good numbers.

I saw the Isles' prospect Ilya Sorkin's numbers in the KHL and they're phenomenal. Below 1.00 GAA, 0.960 Save % 6 Shutouts in 13 starts (although it's telling that's only second in the league).

Plus the team he plays on his an offensive juggernaut...kind of reminds me of how Halverson was last year on that offensive team, takes a lot of pressure of the goalie when the team in front of you is scoring buckets of goals each game.

That being said, Sorkin numbers are still extremely impressive, though I didnt think he looked that special in the U-20 WJCs last year.

He didn't, Shesty outplayed him and looked to be the better goalie (imo) but had that brainfart in the beginning of the gold medal game and got a rather quick hook.

Shesty starting again today. He's started off very well.

One period over, Shesterkin up 1-0. If you Google it, you'll see a bunch of high quality free links to the game. There was a bad bounce off a Ska defenseman's foot sending the puck to he Spartak forward right in front of Shesterkin, who made a big save.

================

Almost half a game into it, Ska (with guys like Kovalchuk, Voynov and some others I don't know who sem very good) looks like a much better team than Spartak. It's now 3-0. Shesterkin didn't get that much work, but he looked excellent on several tough shots. He's on the PK now and stopped two shots with good positioning.

================

Semi-breakaway on Shesterkin who makes it look easy. His glove save made it look like a father-son baseball catch, not a rookie trying to establish himself in a very good league.

================

After two periods, Shesterkin has no goals against on 18 shots. A lesser goalie could've definitely given up a goal or two. Ska up 4-0, so let's hope they don't let up and blow his shut out.

================

Another breakaway (though harassed from the back) by a Spartak forward, another save made easy by Shesterkin. Fifteen minutes to go.

Couple of good saves by Shesterkin, but in each case needed his defenseman to clear the rebound. Twelve minutes to go.

Another shot from up close by Spartak with under 4 minutes to go, another save by Shesterkin. Spartak has played well offensively in the third, but Shesterkin is up to the job.

Ska took a penalty to finish out the game. Really hope this won't cost Shesterkin his shutout... and it did not!

Shutout by Shesterkin!

No goals on 31 shots. Last game was 2 goals on 32 shots, so he gave up 2 goals on 63 shots which is .968%. His GAA is under 0.97 because last game went into OT.

He should be starting in the KHL this season. If its not going to be with SKA, they should loan him to another team because he's good enough to be a starter in the KHL this season. Played well today. He didn't have that much to do because SKA was just much better than Spartak Moscow, but as Beacon said, he could've allowed a goal or two, but didn't.
