Thoughts moving forward:
Goodbye Jake Paterson: He didn't make a single save today that wasn't routine, and he let in a couple softies. He got completely out-played by Langhammer who was one of the best Czech players. In a tournament like this, your goalie needs to be hot in order to go on a run and Paterson was bad today. Fucale should get the next start.
McDavid: I haven't followed him closely but you have to imagine this was one of his worst games yet. A couple bad penalties, a questionable shot on goal after the period had ended, and then he gets benched and gets thrown, cold, into a shootout where he doesn't even register a shot on goal. I'm interested to see how he'll respond as it will say a lot about his character. Hopefully he's more than the whiny kid we saw today.
Drouin and Reinhart: These two are by far our best offensive players and seem to be the only two that create something every time they're on the ice. I'd be interested in seeing them playing together, especially on the PP as it lead directly to Drouin's goal today. Both see the ice well and can finish off each other's nifty passes, something others seem to struggle with (see: Leier and Mantha).
Mantha: I see where the "compete level" comments come from. He looked disinterested all game long, like he didn't want to be there and didn't want to try. He got an assist on the Hudon goal but it was more luck than anything, and that penalty he took for too many men was TERRIBLE. Our best pure goalscorer needs to be better.
Dumba: Honestly, I thought Dumba was pretty good today. He sounded completely dead after the first period but battled hard for the next 45 minutes and didn't make any questionable plays. He had 4 PIMs but one of those calls should have been offsetting minors and I thought on the other one the Czech player grabbed his stick to bait the official.
Paging Nic Petan: Anyone know where Petan is? We need his offensive touch, and fast. He was brought here to be an offensive catalyst and has done...what, exactly?
Early Adversity: I'm actually kind of glad Canada is having this much trouble early on. The last 3 years, we've steam-rolled through the round robin and have absolutely nothing to show for it. Wins aren't going to come easy for this year's squad and hopefully they learn what it takes to win now, so that when the medal round comes we put our best team on the ice. Being the underdog isn't the bad thing, and if Canada wasn't an underdog before, we certainly are after today's loss.
