Hmmm interesting. Did this happen at the camp? If not why even invite him if it could be a problem

Mike Gillis (quoted on TSN.ca) said the injury is a partially torn labrum. It happened on October 27th. The plan was for surgery all along but they delayed surgery to allow him a chance to make the WJC team.

That is hilarious.

Why hilarious, it was his last chance for him to put on the canadian sweater baring he is a superstar in the NHL and plays for canada then.

I understand the reasoning, but that seems like more of a player's outlook. If this is true, management should have prioritized his long-term health over over short term satisfaction. There's always the possibility he gets the chance to suit up for a World Championship or Spengler Cup team some day.

Thoughts moving forward:

Goodbye Jake Paterson: He didn't make a single save today that wasn't routine, and he let in a couple softies. He got completely out-played by Langhammer who was one of the best Czech players. In a tournament like this, your goalie needs to be hot in order to go on a run and Paterson was bad today. Fucale should get the next start.

McDavid: I haven't followed him closely but you have to imagine this was one of his worst games yet. A couple bad penalties, a questionable shot on goal after the period had ended, and then he gets benched and gets thrown, cold, into a shootout where he doesn't even register a shot on goal. I'm interested to see how he'll respond as it will say a lot about his character. Hopefully he's more than the whiny kid we saw today.

Drouin and Reinhart: These two are by far our best offensive players and seem to be the only two that create something every time they're on the ice. I'd be interested in seeing them playing together, especially on the PP as it lead directly to Drouin's goal today. Both see the ice well and can finish off each other's nifty passes, something others seem to struggle with (see: Leier and Mantha).

Mantha: I see where the "compete level" comments come from. He looked disinterested all game long, like he didn't want to be there and didn't want to try. He got an assist on the Hudon goal but it was more luck than anything, and that penalty he took for too many men was TERRIBLE. Our best pure goalscorer needs to be better.

Dumba: Honestly, I thought Dumba was pretty good today. He sounded completely dead after the first period but battled hard for the next 45 minutes and didn't make any questionable plays. He had 4 PIMs but one of those calls should have been offsetting minors and I thought on the other one the Czech player grabbed his stick to bait the official.

Paging Nic Petan: Anyone know where Petan is? We need his offensive touch, and fast. He was brought here to be an offensive catalyst and has done...what, exactly?

Early Adversity: I'm actually kind of glad Canada is having this much trouble early on. The last 3 years, we've steam-rolled through the round robin and have absolutely nothing to show for it. Wins aren't going to come easy for this year's squad and hopefully they learn what it takes to win now, so that when the medal round comes we put our best team on the ice. Being the underdog isn't the bad thing, and if Canada wasn't an underdog before, we certainly are after today's loss.

I think these two are kind of a funny story. Mantha gets all the criticism, and yet he has 5 points in 2 games. He's producing. Petan has 1 point, and yet almost nobody has anything bad to say.

Petan and Rychel seem absolutely lost out there.

I haven't seen Rychel win a puck battle yet. He looks scared, and I'm not sure if he's supposed to be on the team for offensive or defensive reasons, but he's useless in both zones.

Petan - I'm thinking his stats totals for last year was from playing on a strong Portland team last year, he seems out of place on this team, and I don't know why anybody's saying he's an offensive Dynamo.

I don't like that our defence (esp. Dumba) are consistently leading the rush into the offensive zone, they often turn the puck over and have to scramble coming back.

I have no idea how Hudon was ever on the bubble, the guy is a force, wins battles, and is also an offensive threat every time on the ice. Put him with Drouin and whoever, and they'll make something happen.

Mantha scored 3 or 4 PTs from Germany so that isn't very impressive. Not to mention that one of his goals was the product of Drouin but each Petan has not been good either, his goal was also a product of McDavid.

Next game I would really like to see some line changes to get some players going. I really question why Brent Sutter only invited 25 players or so... This seems to have backfired as we have some players on the roster that seem like they are not right for the WJC.

I'd reunite that Hudon-Drouin-Mantha line and make Leier the 13th forward at this point.
Please no. Mantha has major compete issues and it brigs down Hudon and Drouin. If not for Hudon and luck, he would be pointless today. Let Lazar or Reinhart play on Drouins wing. Being a flames fan I know Brent Sutter too well, and he doesn't like change so he will probably roll with the same line up again

Disagree. Mantha wasn't one of the guys piling goals on. If I remember correct, his goals were 1, 2, and 4. He was scoring goals when the game was still up for grabs, and so I think those are good goals. He gave Canada the lead two different times. I can't fault a guy for winning the game.

Drouin and Mantha needs to stick together, but geeze, you can't have a iron-hand grinder in Leier as the 3rd guy on that line.. need more skill

Leier did not impress me.... Gauthier hasn't done a thing to convince me he should be on the team as well.

Leier was actually good today. I'd demote Petan honestly, he's on the team to provide offense and hasn't done that. Make Petan the 13th forward and have him be a PP specialist.

Like I said before. Put Lazar on the line with Drouin and Mantha. He will create a ton of space for them, has great drive, and can score too.

Was confused when Patterson was starting thought it was gonna be dub goalie and Fucale, Lazar was Canada's best player

Lazar - Drouin - Mantha
McDavid - Horvat - Reinhart

The Q line of Hudon - Drouin - Mantha can also be used effectively when Sutter is juggling lines around. Whenever they're together a chance is created and Hudon is strong on the puck for his size.

That top 6 is fine by me, the bottom 7 is juggled by Sutter a lot so I didn't bother throwing anything together. It'll be interesting to see if McDavid gets demoted to 13th forward after today or if Sutter has faith in him. I think he'll stay on the second line but if he has another bad game against Slovakia his role will be filled by someone else.

Reinhart looked great out there. He is going to be a wonderful pro for Buffalo/Edmonton. I also liked Lazar and Anderson's games.

Petan, McDavid, Horvat and Leier need to be better. They are relied upon to be scorers. They didn't look at all dangerous in this game.

I don't watch much of Petan so I am wondering if maybe his point totals in the WHL are high because he piles up a lot of garbage points? I think he had a garbage goal last game and a couple years ago he had 35 points in the regular season and went scoreless in 22 games in the playoffs. I thought he was decent in the Memorial Cup last season but that's just a small snapshot. I am wondering if anyone who watches a lot of Petan could comment.

:handclap:

Very well said... im getting blasted on the other thread because i am coming down hard on Patterson, I'm sorry, he didn't give us a chance to win today, he didn't make any outstanding saves, any other CHL goalie would have resulted in nothing worse...

Its time for Fucale to go the rest of the way...

Give this team a chance at winning

I didn't think Paterson earned the start over Fucale in the pre-tournament games. He's definitely showing a propensity for weak and early goals. Fucale against Slovakia and if he plays well, you ride him the rest of the way.
