Bruins Sign Zdeno Chara To One-Year Contract Extension

BOSTON - Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced today, March 23, that the team has signed defenseman Zdeno Chara to a one-year contract extension through the 2019-2020 season worth $2 million, plus an additional $1.75 million in performance-based incentives.
Chara, who is in his 21st NHL season and 13th with Boston in 2018-19, has appeared in 55 games this season, recording four goals and seven assists for 11 points with a plus-16 rating.
The 42-year-old defenseman has led the Bruins to a postseason berth in nine of his 12 completed seasons with the team, including a Stanley Cup Championship in 2010-11. He ranks sixth in franchise history in games played (948), and fourth in points by a defenseman (452) behind Hall of Famers Ray Bourque (1,506), Bobby Orr (888), and Dit Clapper (474).

Literally no reason for this response...

We are all allowed to have opinions Ms. Alicat.

Yeah there is. He’s been the spine for this team for a decade and a half and is still really effective. If ppl complain about this deal they are out to lunch

That number is going to the rafters and to complain about this deal is wild to me considering how he’s still used

Dang, I've wished for Chara's last year for the past 6 years. I firmly think we should have traded him years ago. Not because I dislike the player, but because his value was higher than his worth.

Though, this is a decent hit for his caliber. I'm not really happy about the deal, but it's not bad. He's good enough to merit this contract for sure.

I'm sure opposing forwards are all very excited to have that gigantic stick of his still reaching out and knocking the puck off of their own sticks, disrupting plays, etc....

And that's not even mentioning the fear of him coming at you along the boards. The old man isn't burnt out yet. I f***ing love it.

Excellent news! Great to see the Big Man will be back for another year. I would assume those bonus incentives will be the same as this year (given the bonus number is exactly the same as this year at 1.75 million, so Games Played Bonus: $1,250,000 (10 gms) + Playoff Qualification Bonus: $250,000 (club qualifies for the playoffs) + Stanley Cup Bonus: $250,000 (club wins the Stanley Cup).

Terrific deal for both sides.

Very reasonable. Close to a guaranteed $3.5 million, right around what I was expecting.

Carlo and Chara

Could be the new Chara and Seids in the playoffs. I for one hope for that.

I was on the fence but I love this deal. Glad to see him back another year. There are other ways to make room for Vaak and I’m glad more young defenseman will be mentored by Chára. I think the further he gets from that knee injury the better he’ll play.

Its not just his play that would be missed.

He's a one-man nuclear deterrent. And if the team is in a rut, he'll pick up his physical game. That always seems to juice the kids.

Again, I'm not saying he still isn't a useful player, he's shown that he is, and I've loved watching a 42 year old whoop up on the youngins lately... just was merely saying I was hoping this was the end of an amazing tenure with the Bruins... that is all.
