A lot of people said that after the panthers and islanders wins. But whatever if everyone is fine with us winning every 6th game then I guess I'll shut up. I'm just thinking they shouldn't be this bad with this roster
Convenient to use the last 6 games, when they won the other 3 before that. They're 4-3-3 in their last 10. Nothing to go crazy about, but nothing for us to be dramatic about either imo. I feel as if they're steadying the ship until Jack's return

Well the effort really has been there this year I think. This is the first game like this I can think of. Maybe Calgary but I did think we made the effort that night, we just played poorly. So I don’t fault Ruff. It happens sometimes. Think the holiday had an effect?

We no showed the first couple periods multiple games now.

We haven't been close to a 3 period effort since the Isles game

We have fallen behind but I didn’t see it as not showing up. I thought we outplayed Minnesota in the 1st but fell behind 2 zip. Not sure Tampa was a no show. I agree that we are making a bad habit of digging ourselves a hole and getting behind. But wow tonight looked like we were mentally elsewhere.

No kidding boys, do f***ing better

Damn, he even called out the teams crappy offsides plays, which i didn't comment on, but definitely noticed!

"That's something you learn in peewee/bantam."

On those 6 or 7 chances they fubarred with offsides.

Ruff: "I didn't like ten of our forwards or 9 of them"..

He's laying into it pretty hard...

Ofcourse, but the last games mean more when judging the team's current level against other teams. They are on a downward spiral right now, they can't keep playing like this or they'll finish last in the division. And performances like this don't really give me hope they'll win three in a row again.

I'll 100% agree that the performance tonight was bad. But let's not forget they played one of their strongest games of the season against Minny 2 nights ago. This team is EXTREMELY young, and inconsistencies will happen. Not excusing their play tonight at all, but saying they're on a downward spiral is not taking into account the context of their play. They deserved to win against Minny 10x more than against Tampa Bay imo, and look how that turned out.

I don’t mind Ruff laying into them but I hope he takes a look at himself and his staff too. The team sure didn’t look prepared tonight. Sure the players take that responsibility, but so should the staff.

No two ways about it, this was a shit effort and no one should come out unscathed. I hope Sunday is significantly better, especially a division game.

I fully expect them to come out with fire and energy.

I mean....they did have plenty of REST tonight. :whatever:

Crap effort for sure. I just wonder about the "coach has to prepare the team" accusations that I see thrown around in hockey. Pretty sure Ruff tries to prepare this team every night, but those players are professional hockey players. They should be able to motivate themselves and show up themselves. Anyhow, the effort definitely wasn't there, but as others have said, I expect them to show up on Sunday night at home.

At the moment, the only thing I put on coaching is the PP system and the defensive zone system, which is looking a lot like Hynes-style chasing in the D zone. The PP looks like someone doesn't give a shit (Recchi?).

The rest of this, falls on the players. Just bad execution all around on details that should be crisp for NHL caliber players. They're freaking PROs, or should be, at least!

Making stupid passes for a third of every game, every couple games is on players for sure. Every game so far this season where they come out like this, passing is key noticeable aspect. Sloppy as shit. Watching other teams tic-tac-toe up the neutral zone or in the offensive zone OR we're running around like chickens with no heads trying to find the puck like a 6-7 year old town league who doesn't know how to work a defensive zone breakout. This is on the forwards and d making bad decisions with the puck, puck management.

Nico and Severson without their head up in key moments (Nico on a 2 vs 1, Sevs on the 6v5 or near end 3rd period had Tatar cruising to an angle pass almost free on net, and Sevs takes a shot that goes either no where or deflected). Nico and other players (Bratt), just telegraphing shots up in orbit in good look situations. Not blaming them on the game, but these are small details that I see. In general a lot of shots Devils take go wide, they don't even get em on net these days. Its hard to tell from TV if they're going for some sneaky deflection play, or just straight up bonking a shot.

Rushing pass plays and not making use of space when they have it is really hurting right now.

Let's see if this game is a wake up call. In prior years, the Devils wouldn't bounce back from this. Want to see if Nico can ignite the room or if the Devils play the last few games is the status quo.

Sure as hope they show up on Sunday, because literally they're at the pivotal point of the season right now. If they lose 1 or 2 more straight, it will be hard to stay in the mix for wild card, particularly if OOT scoreboard goes badly. If they win on Philly they are treading water for now, if they lose they're gonna be at the bottom in no time.

If they hadn’t already lost four of five before tonight I’d be more willing to write this off as a day after holiday road trip dud, but this team isn’t good enough to eat schedule losses without a fight and you can’t have extended periods of losing in this division

They need to win 3 of the next 5 to stay afloat.

Also, the next 14 games may be the easiest stretch of the season, they need to take advantage of it.

I didn't think we played a bad 1st period at all in the Minnesota. I didn't think we had any bad periods that game. Maybe some of that was because the Wild got stuck on the bus for 2.5 hours and didn't get to the game on time, but I thought we were great that period.

They just got a couple goals. One deflection goal and one short handed because our power play is a f***in joke, which is the one constant almost every game this season, other than that first Florida game where we erupted for a couple power play goals.

The only thing I can really ask more of Ruff is to try something with the power play that doesn't involve trying to squeeze blood out of Subban's stone. I'm pretty sure he's already been embalmed. Even the beat writer (the only one we seem to have that isn't employed by the team) is puzzled by the Subban and Vesey stuff. Vesey's been great, but what's he doing on the first unit? Why is Subban CLOGGING up so much power play time? Once again, he has 11 power play points in 130 games as a Devil. I think Jacob Josefson had 11 points on the power play in 58 games in 15-16.

Who else do we give power play time to that has scored less than 11 points on the power play? Mercer who's barely played more than 11 games in the league? Who in the last 3 years/100+ games are we trotting out there that has that few of points on the power play? Probably Vesey also. What's Subban done to have the power play run through him, other than scored a bunch of power play points in the league 3+ years ago? Scored some points this year? Great.

And we didn't draw enough penalties tonight to even be able to see more of this pathetic display, which is for the best because it's really an eyesore.

Ugh…

This team struggles mightily getting to the inside. Interesting, the team would be hemmed in a lot in years past but usually had more high-danger chances. This team is all North/South. Nobody cuts across the ice with ease. Yegor did it last more last year with success.
