You could be issued a penalty if you lose a challenge

You better be sure? What we saw this year is that the difference between a play being onside and offside is a matter of millimeters. How on earth can any coach be sure based on a moment's review? The whole system should be abolished.

So teams get double ****ed when the refs inevitably make the wrong call most of the time? Good job NHL!

Maybe the refs should implement something to fix their god awful officiating

Don't challenge then if it's close, numbnut.

Just do away with the coach's challenge altogether for off-side and Goaltender Interference and spare us most of this review non-sense... But especially Goaltender Interference, what a Godawful moronic idea to begin with.

Calling it now:

Team is desperately defending a 1-goal lead in an elimination game. Pileup in the crease, opponent scores, goalie justifiably freaks out because he was pushed. Coach calls for review, expecting to preserve the lead. Ref decides it's inconclusive, hits that team with an additional penalty. Opponent scores a second unearned goal in the final minute and advances.

Part II: Losing city's Congressman calls for game-fixing inquiry.

This is the kind of insanity that lies on the other side of that door. Don't do it, NHL. Put the rulebook down and walk away.

I bet you that coaches will become WAY more reluctant to use the GI challenge, especially in that scenario. You rather take your chances in OT than with the review booth.

Still, this does feel like a wrong to fix a wrong... which isn't quite like 2 minuses equal a plus. The right thing to do is admit that the coach's challenge isn't having the desired effect and revert things to how they were... but not sure the NHL has the fortitude to admit that just yet.

Enough with this stupid replay-minigame ****.

Seasons are starting to hinge on procedural details that have nothing to do with playing hockey.

Disagree.

We care to determine if puck completely crossed the goal line and have the technology to determine if someone was offside or not.

It's about consistency.

Ideally you give the refs some kind of lattitude: allow them to let a goal stand if the guy was barely offside and not take away the timeout/give a penalty.

But that is a murky swamp no one really wants to waddle into.

I'd change this slightly. Either a penalty or you lose the timeout. Coaches choice. I don't think there will be too many coaches willing to put another team on the PP...

In that scenario, everyone is *sure* the goal is invalid. The goalie is screaming for a replay, the assistant coaches are nodding, the fans are going nuts because they see it on the Jumbotron.

If you're the coach, you're a fool to accept that goal without protest. You're gifting the opponent an overtime instead of an L. That could be a career altering decision.

... but there's nothing you can do if the refs blow the replay call because it's "inconclusive" by whatever definition they're using this week.

Inconclusive shouldn't be a penalty because the refs couldn't definitively tell you your challenge was wrong. It's also close enough that's its a legit challenge and not just a time waste. A conclusive call saying the refs were right should result in a penalty.

Also have Toronto make the decisions like the do with the normal goal/no goal calls. Refs/linesman reviewing their own calls is obviously subject to bias.

Everyone in Buffalo knows how this ends. Double screwed.

Look up their game against Calgary where a puck that went in after the whistle was allowed to count because they decided the whistle was a mistake. Think about that given what happened to Nashville.

They **** who they want however they want and this is just a way to do it twice.

Spoiler alert: this will benefit Chicago and Pittsburgh every time it needs to.

I am 99% down with this idea only thing I would alter is if it is deemed inconclusive just take away the time out do not give a penalty.

And then we have a big controversy over what's considered "inconclusive" when a playoff game hinges on the interpretation of that word.

And round and round we go.

Adding more clauses to a fundamentally flawed rule just ends up producing more flaws.

NHL needs to stay the F away from the replay madness, i.e. trying to get every stinkin call correct.

Right now the NFL has completely screwed their product. There are a lot of people starting to watch hockey now as a result, as it's really the only game out there with lots of action for your time spent watching. But wait, the NHL has caught the bug and they're gonna get everything perfect.

Just sit tight fans, and let's have the drama unfold with commercials as we have the outcome of the game hinge on the call. It's idiotic and I pray the NHL doesn't go that route any further than they already have.

So penalties for missed challenges? Sure, because teams won't challenge everything and the game will be faster as a result. But getting rid of it altogether is even better.

Please stop. When the NHL brings in even half the amount of Revenue the NFL does then maybe you'll have a point.

I guarantee if you're team lost the Game 7 of a playoff series due to an offside, or a blatant missed goalie interference you would be right back here complaining. Let's make sure this game has integrity where if the right call can be made, it will be.

This is a terrible idea, for reasons described above.

If the nhl wants to do this, they need to make it so all goals are reviewed in Toronto. If there's sonething they want to look at more closely, let the officials know and instigate a booth review.

That way a coach won't have to play ipad roulette and the refs deem they done screwed up.
