Barkov is really good. He's in that Eichel/Matthews/Barzal tier of being not generational.

There are THREE Barkov threads just on the front page.. can we please just have a "Player Discussion: Aleksander Barkov" thread and call it a day?

I don't know who this "Barkov Q" guy is, but I can assure you, he isn't generational, at least not yet.

Great times to be an NHL fan; what with all these "Generational Talents" currently playing..........

Time some people learn to use "elite" as an adjective as opposed to generational. :thumbu:

(Or Premier, Top Notch, One Of The Best, etc...)

No one is even generational yet.

Just to draw an equivalence, LeBron is generational.

It was MJ before him. Tim Duncan also.

Kobe is borderline (I dont think he is).

Thats it. Probably the last 2 most recent generational are Crosby and Id say Lidstrom

Present and current? None. Zero. Not yet. Except Crosby as mentioned.

Now let's close this thread. Barkov doesnt deserve these overrated comments as no one should have labeled him as generational.

Is Barkov on the brink of generational status?

Nope. Hes a franchise player.
I will tell you who the generational players are. There can be only one per generation or it does not make sense. Of course it is entirely up to you to define the years of a generation.

  • Silent Generation, 1925-1945: Howe.
  • Baby Boomers: 1945-1965. Gretzky.
  • Generation X, 1965-1985: Lemieux. Could be Jagr also because of longevity.
  • Millennials, 1985-1995: Crosby. MALKIN + OVECHKIN
  • Generation Z, 1995-2005: Is it Barkov? Nope, McDavid for now IS NOT GENERATIONAL!, but I would not be surprised if a better player emerges.
I fixed your asertation of recent talent.

I wouldn't call Matthews or Eichel generational yet either, but...

Barkov
Age 19 + 20 seasons: 137GP, 44G, 51A, 95P (0.32G/GP, 0.69P/GP)

Eichel
Age 19 + 20 seasons: 142GP, 48G, 65A, 113P (0.34G/GP, 0.79P/GP)

Matthews
Age 19 + 20 seasons: 135GP, 68G, 51A, 119P (0.50G/GP, 0.88P/GP).

Both were/are significantly more productive than Barkov at the same age.
Both also played on significantly better teams. So yeah having good wingers helps when the team is a crap shoot.

For all I care yes. That word has been used so inflationary that it lost all meaning. Perhaps Yannic Perrault is generational too. Nobody won face offs like he did.

I think he's generational in the sense that he'll be a selke favourite for the next 10+ years

So f***ing what? Can we please stop this empty talk about Generationals and Elites. (Yes, I know we can't).

Words and definitons does not predict or measure their careers. It's what they'll do and achieve. Let's discuss about these definitions again when they're retiring. And during the journey, discuss and enjoy the game of hockey and them as hockey players instead.

It's sometimes funny, but most are actually tired of this bullshit.

So many Barkov threads lol. He is a great player not generational in the traditional sense at least. We may have an argument for a generational two way player if such a thing exists which to this point it has not.

So what about Bobby Orr? He's a franchise player or?

Jesus Christ. Kid is having a great year, no doubt about it. But generational?

My big criteria/question for generational status is: would you build a roster around x player?

Exactly zero GMs would choose Barkov over a dozen other players as the focal point of their roster.

Chill.

Great player. Nope not even close to generational. Finally hitting the ppg mark in his 5th full season. You can talk about his defence until the cows come home but generational players win major awards before their 5th full season.
Just to be clear, Bergeron has a chance for his first PPG season this season in his 14th season and Toews did have a PPG season but he played under 50 games that season. Not saying he's generational, because he is not, but could be a hall of famer if he keeps it up for a bunch more years? Not something people might have thought last year.

I think Barkov is the one of 1-2 players right now that shows no glaring weaknesses. If we’re looking at it from that aspect, then yes, he is generational.

Probably the player that has given NJ the most fits this season. He's so good
