Marner is the Leafs Franchise player. Wrong
The Team is built around him. Wrong
He’s the main playmaker.
He leads the Team in Points. Only when you consider that he has played more games than Matthews who has beaten him in P/GP the last 2 seasons
He leads the team in power play points and also leads the team in short handed points. Irrelevant on whether a player is a Franchise Player or not
He’s also the leafs best penalty killer. Wrong
He does it all like a franchise player does.

The Leafs' best penalty killers (forwards) are Hyman and Mikheyev.
The Leafs' franchise player and who the team is built around is Matthews, and it's not particularly up for debate.
The Leafs' best offensive player is Matthews.
The Leafs' best defensive forward is Matthews.

Generational: Gretzky, Lemieux, and Crosby.

Franchise: Yzerman, Sakic, Forsberg, and Malkin.

Great: Nieuwendyk, Gainey, and I'll say....Kopitar.

Good: RoR, Brind'Amour, Bergeron, and maybe Point/Stamkos.

Just thinking of cup winning Centres in the past 30 plus years.

I have Bergeron as franchise atleast. 2-way beast, who plays 1C and has a bag of Selkes + Stanley cup.

I find it very interesting and different from how I see terms used here than I used to think they meant. Idk if it's a Canadian influenced different use thing. Or because I was talking in NFL message circles for years first

Like I still always initially link generational to mainly mean prospect. Not actual top of the league. Like McDavid and Lindros to me are those generational prospects. Like Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning at QB.

Franchise player to me isn't some elite tier a step below others generational tier. Just the key highest end highest marketed guy they talk first about on a broadcast about a team.

Are we winning a cup with this guy as our best player?

That question should be asked when determining if a guy is a franchise player.

If guys like Marner, Huberdeau, Cat, Laine, Stone, and Rantanen are your teams best players, I don't think you are winning a cup.

Some of them are franchise-esque but not faces of the franchise or one to be relied on.

But I voted for only Pettersson, Eichel, Aho, Huberdeau and Scheifele.

Just Eichel. I dont use the term "franchise player" lightly. A lot of elite players here nonetheless.
