And EDM is doing a good job of it!

All kidding aside if the trade is done properly (i.e. addressing key areas) then I think EDM as team would become better

This should read Chia did a good job of it . We had a decent forward group until Chia came along . Our D needed work

The only way Edmonton becomes better out of it, is to trade their 'Generational' center for cost-controlled Norris Calibre Dman AND a franchise Centre.

Some combo of a Centre like:
Eichel / Seguin / Matthews

and a Dman like:
Jones/Pietrangelo/Josi/Dahlin

How many teams are willing to gut their team for McDavid in the first place?

This^.

There is also a risk factor.
Granted McD is young and you have him locked up really long term, but God forbid, something happens, and then you are effed.

So, you have to recognize the need to massively overpay, but without gutting the team, in currency that works for you and the Oil. Don't see that option for any team.

McDavid should be downgraded due to his contract value? I’m sure teams would more than gladly pay his salary which is likely considered an underpayment.

However, if salaries weighted so heavily Mackinnon would be considered the most valued player in the league. He earns half of McDavid and 35% less than Kucherov. He plays on an inferior team and being a 1C more valued than Kucherov playing wing. The +/- is nearly the same even though he is nearly 30 points ahead.

McDavid and McKinnon are considered franchise players, just don’t see Kucherov at that same level.

In a cap league salaries do weigh that heavily and you are correct that MacKinnon with his contract is one of the most valuable players in the league; the main thing holding him back from being the most valuable is that he has only four years of term remaining while McD and Kuch have twice that.

That said, given that Kucherov is running away with the scoring race this season and was doing the same last season before dropping off late in the season when he was suspected to be playing through an undisclosed injury, your statement that he is not a franchise player is downright laughable. I suppose Ovechkin and Kane aren’t franchise players in your mind either, huh?
