Solarte starting in LF v RHP?

Someone(s) -( Solarte,Tulo, Martin, Pearce, Pillar, for e.g.) must have an above average season to make this lineup work

I think it is reasonable to think that Tulo, Travis and Pillar will have better seasons then last. How much is the question. But figuring that Tulo and Travis should at least play more then last season, should improve their numbers and in turn improve the Jays. Losing a player like Bautista isn't going to hurt if anything it will improve the team overall.

I like the ability of the multiple switch hitters in the lineup. Adds flexibility. With that being said, I don't see either of those being the starting lineups come opening day. There will definitely be an acquisition to alter that lineup. Has to be.

Preferably, yes. That's simply the lineup as things stand today, IMO.

That said, I'd be fine with that lineup is the rotation was Stroman - Darvish - Sanchez - Happ - Estrada.

Actually, if they all hit their three year averages, its quite a good lineup. Major League Leaderboards » 2017 » Batters » Dashboard | FanGraphs Baseball

As of today, if no additional players are acquired, the optimized lineup would be:

V. Right
1. Travis 112
2. Donaldson 151
3. Smoak 113
4. Morales 103
5. Tulo 97
6. Solarte 115
7. Martin 104
8. Hernandez 113
9. Pillar 80

Bench: Carrera (97), Pearce (109), Diaz (120), Backup Catcher (-100)

V. Left
1. Travis 112
2. Donaldson 164
3. Smoak 124
4. Pearce 107
5. Morales 135
6. Tulo 100
7. Martin 109
8. Hernandez 108
9. Pillar 108

Bench: Carrera (86), Solarte (80), Diaz (83), Backup Catcher (-100)

wRC+ in the split over the last three years. They won't do exactly that, obviously, but if everyone were to approximately repeat what they've done in recent years, those look like a couple of solid, well-rounded lineups, with the only real weakness being the 9-spot against righties (which is acceptable given the defensive value in that spot) and maybe the spot Hernandez is filling, since his samples are tiny. One addition would go a long way towards making this a really nice lineup.

It is good lineup...I’m thinking the O/U #Wins is around 81.

A couple of three positive (out of the ordinary things) need to happen to get to that extra 8-10 Ws to challenge for the division and/ or WC. You know, something like Tulo and Travis playing 100- 120 games together would be a huge positive for this team. It completely changes the psyche.

Adding a guys like Cain and Darvish......

~83 by FG's count. 87 if you think Aaron Sanchez won't have blister issues. Adding Cain or Darvish puts you at 90. Adding Cain & Garcia gets you to ~90.

Have there been any health reports on Sanchez or Travis?

If Sanchez has lingering blister issues the whole thing is blown to Halifax.

According to Shi Davidi, the Blue Jays have avoided arbitration with 3B Josh Donaldson, settling at 23-million dollars for 2018. It's a record arbitration deal, passing the $21.65 million dollar extension Washington's Bryce Harper was given in May of last year.

I am sure if they can pay him 23M for one year, they can pay him 23 M or more for a few more years. But it's not about the money. It's about where they want to take this team.

Ugh. Avoiding arbitration probably also means no extension.

I don't think the twits from Cleveland have any intention of signing him to an extension. They seem to be locked in to their science experiment with this roster.

But, I think this is the best-case scenario for some hope that an extension is at least possible.

Settling now means they have been talking. It would suggest they're on the same page in terms of his value. It means there has been a lot of dialogue.

The worst scenario would have been a hearing and it being decided that way. That would have meant they stopped talking and were at an impasse.

Too soon.

Lame duck Josh Donaldson season oh boy

Not soon enough. Where have you been, good sir.

Why only one year?

I was shocked to see one year too....

I'm cereal. I was thinking long-term deal or he would go elsewhere. Other than the money how does this benefit JD? Isn't it risky?

It benefits him because he can still try to work out an extension if that's what he wants to do, and if not then he's a free agent at the end of the season.

He's not a free agent yet, this news just determined how much he would make this year before he becomes a free agent.

I believe both Sanchez and Donaldson settled for less in arbitration then was expected. Donaldson was projected to may 24 million and Sanchez was 3.5 million. Does this mean we have more dollars for FA?

Loup also signed for less then 2.5 that was projected

Here are the projections from MLBTR
  • Josh Donaldson (5.158) – $20.7MM
  • Aaron Loup (5.040) – $1.8MM
  • Ezequiel Carrera (4.039) – $1.9MM
  • Marcus Stroman (3.148) – $7.2MM
  • Kevin Pillar (3.113) – $4.0MM
  • Aaron Sanchez (3.069) – $1.9MM
  • Devon Travis (3.000) – $1.7MM
  • Roberto Osuna (3.000) – $5.6MM
  • Dominic Leone (2.123) – $1.2MM
Donaldson signed for $23M, Sanchez for $2.7M, Loup for $1,812,500M, Carrera for $1.9M, and I could be forgetting someone.

EDIT: Travis at $1.45M. Thanks, Discoverer.
