The way this has been handled is critical and frankly is eroding the O even further!!! The league was already struggling and the lack of a plan and some serious lobbying to start up is only hurting it further!! If the teams and league were funded properly play could start. There’s some serious concern from many of my connections that this could seriously jeopardize the viability of the CHL I’ve actually had 2 chats with people that believe this may cause a complete new league to be born!!
The current business model of the OHL/CHL hasn't worked for years. Now, all it's problems are being exposed.
While this certainly isn't good for the OHL/CHL in the short term if they see their weaknesses and act upon them it could be beneficial in the long run. If they don't then a new league coming up to take their place may be beneficial for junior hockey as a whole.
I would imagine if there's going to be a change in the current business model then contraction is on the table across the CHL. We could see all three leagues drop a number of teams, maybe go to 3 x 16 team leagues or even 2 x 16 - 20 team leagues. Fewer teams accessing the same talent pool increases the competitiveness of every team. Add in some alignment of the rules, some changes to how things are done in terms of the draft/import draft/import players teams can carry and you have a vastly improved product across the board.
If there were to be a new league to start up would it involve all new teams? Would it be some current owners looking to break away to avoid the costs of any potential contraction or simple losses that may be generated by the current league and it's troubles? The easiest way to achieve contraction would be to have a group of owners from each league that are comprised of the biggest markets walk away and leave the rest holding the bag.
A whole new league from scratch, new owners etc would have a tough time accessing arena rights if there's a current franchise already there. It would also hurt products in both leagues unless there is agreements on transfer rights etc until a new league has established itself which, with arena rights etc would be tough to do.
The only way a new league works is when the old ones fail completely or big money is behind it with the legal resources to chase the old leagues out.
I would like to see a complete revamp of junior hockey in the country and the best way for that to happen is through the biggest markets breaking away from the current leagues forcing them into bankruptcy unless they are willing to buy out some teams to maintain the old identity with a new business plan.
