if you consider that marleau played in the 82 game season era, howe “lost” the opportunity to play 310 games due to season length.

whereas due to lockouts and covid marleau lost 128 games.

howe also played 419 games in the WHA.

yup, gotta bring back the WHA or have Marleau play somewhere else equivalent for 5 years.

Gordie Howe put up a 103 point season at age 40, and a 41 point season at age 51. I don't think Marleau topping him will take away anything from his legacy, though Marleau is pretty clearly done as a useful player.

I really like Marleau but I hope Howe keeps the record.
My personal preference would be Marleau pulling a Williams and signing for the playoffs but missing enough games - then he'd be fresh too.

It won't take anything away from Howe if he does

Howe would for sure say "GO for it!"

These are both 100% true.

In context, simply playing more GP doesn’t do anything to touch Howe’s longevity. He played in an era of 70 game seasons, and played over 400 games in the WHA. Nobody is going to think less of Howe because of something Patrick Marleau did.

And, Howe lived to see nearly every other one of his records broken. He understood that they’re just numbers, that he had his day in the sun and it was someone else’s turn. If he were around to see this, you can bet your ass he’d be the first one to congratulate Marleau on the achievement.

Are you serious?
Yeah. Im sick and tired of "mister hockey". Yeah he played until he was 50. Big deal. He wasnt anything special otherwise. Just s plain and simple superstar. There are dozen of players like him every decade maybe more.

I honestly thought your first post was clever sarcasm.

Dude, you are very much off-base here. There have been other posters who came here with your same opinion, and then became educated and realized how great Gordie Howe was.

Hopefully you are just a young dude spouting off about something you haven't properly researched.

Naaaah. I used to think Gordie was great then I did my research. Glorified Jagr. Even though Jagr is the greater player.

It would not hurt Howe at all. As long as he has his 4 Stanley Cups, 6 Hart Trophies, and 6 Art Ross Trophies, 23 all- star appearances, over 20 straight 20 goal seasons, top 10 scorer for over 20 seasons. Also many of the greatest players and broadcasters of all time who actually watched him play during his era say he was one of the best ever. Their opinion is actually valid. Howe did far more than just play long.

Gordie would still be playing if he avoided contact like Marleau.
Skating well above average and having great hockey sense is hardly avoiding contact. He's just not stupid.

He's gonna break the record with SJ. Some will get their panties in a twist. Most will realize it does nothing to take away from Howe or how long he played. It will be the 1 record Marleau has on his own while Howe has others.

I hope he doesn't. "Records are made to be broken". Not that one bud.

He can try, but he shouldn't.

It can't be stressed enough how putrid and awful he looked with the Penguins. He didn't look like a player at the end of his rope, he looked like a player who had been hanging there for years.

Just something else to consider, but that's also less games each season that Howe had to grind through.
