there is potential rumblings that the WB/Scranton Penguins are about to exit Northeast PA, as there is no arena lease for the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza for 2019 or beyond.... where Pittsburgh is intending to relocate them has not been named or determined...

the franchise has been a Pittsburgh affiliate since 1999, after being primarily a Quebec affiliate in Fredericton, as the Express, minor secondary affiliation with Vancouver, brief stops in Halifax, as the Citadels, just prior to the Mooseheads junior league team set up shop there, and then Cornwall, as the Aces, after the transfer to Colorado, they replaced Philadelphia in Hershey, now of course, the Capitals affiliate since 2005

Just tweeted at a very well respected WB/S Pens blogger who says both sides in the lease negotiations have signed confidentiality agreements, so there has been no news at all from anyone that actually knows anything.

So those "potential rumblings", which he hasn't heard BTW, aren't coming from anyone with actual knowledge of the situation.

ok, just thought I'D pass along that piece of information, now that the VAN/Utica "fire" has been quelled for the time being.....

additionally, the County actually owns the franchise, not the Penguins, as that was a contract after the sidebar over PIT and the building of CONSOL, in addition, MSA @ Casey Plaza seems not to be attracting other ancillary events to offset, but if WB/Scranton does relocate, top destination is Wheeling, yes, the Nailers could be in play....

Literally none of this is correct.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Lease Discussions Continue
Zach Spedden on January 18, 2019 in Hockey, Minor League/Juniors

Discussions on a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lease extension continue, as the AHL club is approaching the expiration of its current pact for Mohegan Sun Arena.
Currently the Penguins are playing at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on a lease that expires at the end of June. Thus far, the team and arena owner Luzerne County Convention Center Authority have not finalized an extension. However, authority officials indicate that discussions with the organization are ongoing.
The latest update was provided following an authority meeting on Wednesday. One authority member indicated that discussions with the Pittsburgh Penguins–who own the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins–continue, but could not disclose specifics of the negotiations.
Following the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority’s first meeting of 2019 on Wednesday, member Donna Cupinski said the board is actively in talks with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. However, she was not allowed to give any details per a nondisclosure agreement.
“We’re doing what’s in the best interest of fans, the community and everyone involved,” Cupinski said. “We can’t help the rumors (from circulating).”
The current agreement is set to expire at the end of June. The Penguins are in the middle of their 20th season as a tenant at the facility.
The Penguins have played at the arena since it opened in 1999.

GR there have been discussions, from what I have heard, that no WBS merchandise is being sold in the arena, there's a blog called "Chirps from Center Ice", WHICH IS solely on WB/Scranton, but Pittsburgh has Wheeling as its affiliate, what has been the trend lately in the AHL..... THE AHL franchise is sacrificed and the ECHL franchise gets promoted... since 2015, and the advent of the Pacific Division, the league lost Manchester, Worcester, Norfolk, with the assist from Edmonton, then when Arizona exercised the option on Springfield, what happened there, you lost Springfield in essence because the decision to relocate Portland there.

the point I'm making is Luzerne County actually owns the franchise because one man, Howard Baldwin, yes, the same one who tried the Connecticut Whale fiasco, put Pittsburgh through another BK, see the continual sidebar over Arizona, nevermind Rigas, Adelphia, and the whole issue over Buffalo until the Pegula, that's why Lemieux actually saved the Penguins, and likely WB/Scranton never comes to pass if the Penguins left Pittsburgh

It doesn't matter what point you're making, you're wrong. :laugh:

The Pittsburgh Penguins own the WB/S Penguins.

It doesn't matter what they sell in the arena, nor what's happened to other teams and cities, nor are there any "actually"s.

The Pittsburgh Penguins own the WB/S Penguins.

End of story.

what happens if there's no extension, axe..... I just had to straighten out a few folks over the ridiculous notion of relocating the Wolves to Nevada, because Vegas doesn't own the franchise there, see how that gets started

No Chris what you wanted to do was to again try to show everyone how smart you are and how "connected" you are...and once again what you did was create confusion and utter nonsense.

Need a source. Hearing discussions inside your head does not valid what garbage your stating on any of your posts.

Or is this your dream that if WBS does not renew their agreement with the arena that this might be the chance that Portland gets back into the AHL?

You have a team in Portland in the ECHL, right? So root them on, support them, and stay off the AHL message boards because you do not make any sense everything you post something here regarding current AHL matters.

I was curious about who owns the WBS Pens because I rarely hear anything about most team owners in the AHL.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are the American Hockey League affiliate of the National ... Owner(s), Ron Burkle · Mario Lemieux.

It’s probably more likely that providence will be the only ahl team left in New England in 10-20 years than another ahl team moveing to a arena in New England

that's correct, it is unlikely the trend that began in 2014/15, is reversing itself, as was predicted when the reality set in over the Burke comments from 2006 are now more prophetic as time moves on....

Worcester, Portland, Newfoundland, and Manchester are thriving now, it might take a bit to secure Manchester's place in pro hockey and should've told you that no market is safe, independent of league affiliation, we'll see how long MGM gets tired of backing the Thunderbirds, and then Hartford's there and what will Bridgeport become if the Islanders get tired of them, that's the franchise everyone keeps forgetting about

Who OWWWWNNNNNSSSS, the team? You need a short goalie to ask the question. Now hang up.

Actually, if Pittsburgh had gone to KC the team could have stayed or could have gone. If they can't negotiate a new lease in Pittsburgh, I am sure there are many other cities that would enjoy an AHL team, Manchester, St. John's, Milwaukee, Chicago, Rosemont, etc.

Manchester is a NO;

Newfoundland is no longer an option;

Manchester will likely be committed under new ownership, whether the current group there actually sells it as was thought to be reported, now whether LA keeps the affiliation or not is dependent on if the committment is there....

Newfoundland is solid, just as Worcester has been solid since the Railers took hold at DCU, THE ONLY BLIP THERE was would the Growlers have taken had Deacon and the Edge ownership not resolved their differences co-existing at Mile One

Yeah, Chicago and Milwaukee would love an AHL team, especially because they have teams already.
