Why is it inconceivable for Matthews to be McDavid's equal?

McDavid just consistently makes more happen throughout the course of the regular season, mainly due to his unmatchable speed. The way he gets behind defenders with ease and opens up his teamates like maroon for easy tap ins.

Mcdavid barring injury should always finish comfortably ahead points wise in the regular season. I do however believe their playoff ppg will be similar when it's all said and done.

Leafs have the top10 players currently in league, so as I have McDavid as 11th sure he is better. You all are just Leaf haters. :sarcasm:

If it is it shouldn't be. That being said after the year McDavid had Matthews would need to have a big year next year to be in the discussion.

Three words: insecure Oiler fans. Honestly McDavid is tremendous and is more than likely to be the best player in the league for the duration of his prime but what Matthews has shown thus far while it doesn't put him as McDavid's equal of course does indicate its really not beyond the realm of possibility, its certainly not a laughable prospect as many here will claim.

yeah, that was a bit confusing to me, no offence to mcdaddy, but he didn't deserve a single vote. mcdaddy is better now and likely going forward but Matthews defensive acumen is tiers above.

Tiers? Really? What a load of crap.

Matthews played a few seconds on the PK all season. McDavid has been a regular since his rookie season. The way McDavid backchecks and strips pucks from opponents is tiers above Matthews.

So it's "insecure Oilers fans" (isn't name calling a group of fans an infractionable act) fault that leads fans make these threads every week?

In case nobody has caught on, a Matthews vs McDavid thread was started by a Finnish Ducks fan who knows next to nothing about Matthews game and typically only has negative things to post about Leafs players. This thread was started soon after Laine didn't win the Calder.

Matthews/Leafs fans being set up to be bashed on? Looks like.

Mcdavid has never gone more than two games without a point. Think about that. Mcdavid had more assists than Matthews had points and Mcdavid could have scored close to 50 simply by shooting when reasonable to do so.

Well because he's not better then EIchel for one.

EIchel 20 yrs old 0.93 PPG. 57 in 61.
MAthews 19 yrs old 0.88 PPG 69 in 82.

Also Matthews went in stretches where he was awfully cold and mcdavid had 30 multi point games, never going more then three games without a point. Matthews literally went a month without scoring during one stretch and then a 2-3 weeks during another. His 29 assists are meh compared to mcdavids 70.

Just be happy leaf fans that you get a superstar on your team ...he doesent have to be the next crosby if he leads the leafs to a cup does it matter?

Let's also think about this. McDavid just won the Hart Trophy over the entire NHL of great players. Matthews the Calder against rookies. There is simply no reasonable comparison at the moment.

Matthews had the same number of takeaways as McDavid did this year but fewer turnovers, make a poll on hf to see who's the better defensive forward and playing pk isn't everything, lol.

In all honesty I think the difference between McDavid and any elite hockey player right now is that he has this high end speed/acceleration with the puck that almost nobody has ever combined with the vision he has.

Putting anyone as a tier below McDavid is still a pretty damn good tier. He may end up considered higher then Crosby on hockey's top players of all time list if he can accomplish the team accolades. So much will rely on health. Most of the greats all had major injuries impacting their numbers.

If Matthews can play second fiddle to him but still pull off a Cup win then you won't find any complainers in Toronto about McDavid's excellence.

the fact mcdavid plays the PK along with having the best 5v5 high scoring chances in the league is nothing short of incredible

Mcdavid has the superior skating and playmaking skills. Only thing Matthews is better at is his shot it's quicker and heavier but everywhere else it's clearly Mcdavid.
