Because nothing he's ever done at comparable points in their careers has measured up to McDavid and he's displayed nothing at the NHL level so far that would make any reasonable person think the decent sized gap between them will ever be closed.

McDavid does more things better. Simple as that. Better playmaker, better stickhandler, better skater, better two way player, better hockey IQ... Matthews has goal scoring on him, that's about it.

Speed. He'll likely be in the second tier center group with Eichel for the next decade

So how many centers are in the first tier then? Because there aren't going to be many centers, if any, ahead of Matthews and Eichel outside of McDavid in the future.

Matthews IQ is far better away from the puck.

But he just scored 40 goals as a 18 year old rookie how often does that happen

Concede that McDavid is the better player but Matthews is probably the better goal scorer and also better defensively.

I'm putting McDavid in his own tier. Similar to Crosby. Sure there will be season where Mattews or Eichel have a better season but McDavid will probably be considered the best player in the world for a decade or so.... or until Crosby hands that off to him.

matthews is a great player. elite. but mcdavid is generational. 100 points in his 2nd season..... what the kid creates every game is mind boggling.
