So the talk of our goalies in the revamp thread had me thinking back on Cam's backup goalies in the past. Similarly the talk of the the low points and bad spots on our team also had me thinking back on Cam's backup goalies of the past, because well, most of them have been bad. But who of the bad is the worst? Our nominees (and their stats for those of you who like that sort of thing) (in chronological order)

By the numbers, it's Boucher, but I never remember him playing *that* poorly. Though, I think everyone will say Grahame here.

No one will ever beat Jamie Storr for worst Hurricanes backup though. 0-8-2 .878 sv% 2.91 GAA

If you're just looking at the numbers, Peters might be the best (unless you include Murphy). Yikes.

Leighton was one of the most incompetent goalies I've ever witnessed in the NHL. He was so bad it hurt to watch.

Seeing him make that run with the Flyers was like stepping into an alternate dimension for a few weeks. Then abruptly coming back to reality as come confused announcers were trying to figure out what was going on...

I liked Legace. He didn't have awesome numbers but he was pretty consistent from what I remember. He also had a hell of glove.

Nobody took themselves out of the play better than John Grahame. That guy was a mess.

Grahame, no doubt. Anyone remember that classic game where he told Maurice he was about to go show them how goalie position should be played, or something boastful like that, and then proceeded to get shelled for 3 or 4 quick goals, and Maurice left him in because of his pre-game comments?

I don't remember that, but it sounds like a classic Whalercanes story. Do you remember the date by any chance?

One thing's for sure, it's most definitely NOT Legace (he was actually pretty good here) or Murphy (small but impressive sample size)

Well you know, John, having played the position, I can tell you that challenging the shooter is one of the most important things you can do. And you could see there that Michael Leighton is really playing with a lot of confidence there with the way he pushed out to challenge the shooter. He might want to challenge a little bit less next time, but I really like what I'm seeing out of Leighton here and I think that confidence is going to pay huge dividends for him.

Didn't he say he was going to go on a "world class run"?

17 Saves on 25 shots, .680Sv%, 8 GA

Quite amusingly, that's not even his only 8 goal game

1/3/03 with the Bruins, although that was a slightly less embarrassing 27Sv/35Shot performance

He also gave up 6 goals on 7 occasions, but never 7

Gotta go "fainting goat" on this one.

At least he did provide us with the opportunity to laugh at Philly fans as they finally understood the depth of his suckitude at an incredibly important juncture though.
