Who thinks the Tavares money could be better spent?

Was the Tavares contract the best use of cap dollars?

Love JT. A mans man. Marleau for a third year is a worry. But JT? Not worries at all.
Shouldn't worry. I'm sure there was an understanding between the two parties that he would play here for two years then be dealt to a team/area of his choosing. Leafs can take a contract dump in return to make up the difference.

Last night: Tavares doesn’t dominate a pre season game.

Today: this thread.

LOL, one has nothing to do with the other but thanks for the feedback Captain Illogical Assumption.

LOL, yesterday Rain = today Pizza ... makes as about much sense as your post.

It's quite hard to turn him down on July 1st not knowing where or to whom you're allocating the money to.

If I have a concern it's how it effects Marner and his upcoming contract - playing together (also stacking the PP) and having Marner PPG+ and giving him more leverage to earn a contract closer to Matthews rather than Nylander perhaps isn't the best way keep them together long term.

Also physically in terms skating for Tavares after 30 may be an issue, but you can say that for a lot players who's skating isn't their strongest asset.

The way I see it, it was a way for the Leafs to inject more elite skill into the organization. Buffalo tanked and got Dahlin, but we converted cash into Tavares. If that squeezes out Nylander or other forwards, it still allows the Leafs to make trades to get other assets which can keep fueling the roster.

His presence takes the pressure off of Matt and allows the kid to mature and play without dealing with much media

Unfortunately, one can't build a perfect team. An elite #1C with prime years remaining seldom reach free agency in the cap era. Dubas seized the opportunity to sign Tavares to a reasonable contract.

Just ask the Islanders, would they rather have Tavares
OR
Cap space that can't be used to sign elite players from FA, because none are available

Or you can say Tavares is such a fundamentally strong player, always on the right side of the puck, great motor, very good on faceoffs, team leader, great shot that if his wheels slow down a bit he will still be a great asset.

Most Isle fans would say cap space.
The few honest ones would say Tavares.

Tavares was a once in a decade kind of UFA. It'll probably be over 10 years before there's another opportunity for the Leafs to sign a still-in-his-prime star from another organization AND have the cap space to make it happen. This signing required the alignment of the stars including the Islanders nickel and diming Tavares and the Leafs' resurgence and the right contract situation in Toronto.

Money well spent.

This type of thread might have been sensible if Doughty/Karlsson were UFAs willing to sign at the same time and Toronto went with Tavares.

Based on what was in front of Dubas, this is an outstanding acquisition.

Yes, very well spent and he's not even played a regular season game yet.

Sure, there's ways to be a very good player at that age, look at Thornton for example.

I think signing him was a good signing but only if they moved one of the kids preferably Nylander. It's trading from a position of strength moving him for a Dman but they don't seem interested in that. I just think the forward group is over kill they all can't be on ice at same time the depth upfront is crazy compared to the defense especially the right side. The left side is fine though.
