Who thinks the Tavares money could be better spent?

Was the Tavares contract the best use of cap dollars?

Karlsson might be like Tavares was with the habs.. Not even give them a meeting. So why save money for it? Add Tavares and if next offseason Karlsson says he wants to play here, then you make it work. They will have the cap to sign him, shuffle around the other guys and then sign Matthews and Marner.

Also not even out of pre-season and the first time the whole team is together and people want to draw conclusions. Tavares was a beast in the two games before this.

Sure it could have been spent better. We could have kept JvR and Bozak (who might produce about as many points as Tavares between them while being defensive seives) for only 1 million dollars more:sarcasm:

Montreal's been looking for a centre since Jacques Lemaire - you add an elite superstar centre if you're lucky to have the chance to. And the $11MM is less than what the market would bear - given what SJ was speculated to be offering.

This whole narrative of the Leafs not needing another centre is so stupid. And Gord Miller saying how Kadri or JVR had almost as many goals as Tavares over the past year/two years, whatever - is utterly ridiculous.

ELITE players are rare, those who make players around them better and more dangerous. Those who don't need a defensive breakdown or a mistake to create a scoring chance, those who can play against TOP players and still produce.

All things being equal, if there was an elite defenseman available for the same money (Karlsson) then maybe it makes more sense, but that's not a lock either. Pitts won a few cups with two elite centres and an arguably worse defense than what the Leafs have today.

Adding more scoring doesn't mean the defense is worse by comparison - unless you're only comparing the relative strengths of your offense vs. your defense, which is stupid. Adding more scoring only makes it easier on the defense, it lessens the burden on them.

So yesterday, the story is how Marner was superb, how the PP and PK won the game, not how many turnovers in the neutral zone, giveaways in their own end, coverage in front cost the Leafs the game. The result is a win and a celebration of offense rather than a loss and further question marks on the defense. Either way, adding an elite/rare superstar brings ZERO negatives to this situation - sorry Gord Miller

You mean Gord "I just got a text from an NHL GM" Miller?

Miller is great at PBP, but terrible for sports radio...just my opinion

Even if we have to trade Nylander in a year or two because of the cap, signing Tavares was still a very solid move.

Presumably Nylander could get a similar trade return to Duchene. 1st rounder + NHL ready very very good D prospect + 2nd rounder + recent 1st rounder prospect.

I'd very easily take all of that + Tavares over Nylander. Tavares alone is better than Nylander, and probably better than Nylander will be.

JT is great and we have seen with the Pens that having a strong forward core can make up for your defensive deficiencies. Washington lost Shattenkirk, Alzner and Schmidt and still won. Meanwhile, the powerhouse dcores like NSH, CAR, CAL aren't as successful.

He's John Tavares. There's only a handful of comparables in the league. When you can get that, for no prospects or picks, you go after it.

Saying you don't want Tavares because of his salary is the equivalent of saying you hope none of your prospects develop into a star because you might have to pay him as such.

The money is well spent. You have 2 quality centers a la Crosby/Malkin. You don’t pass that up.
The question is do you spend a lot of money on 2 wingers? We need a serious D.

no we don't. Dubas said our D is underrated

Completely behind this signing. Three strong centerman/lines is mandatory to win anything in this league and Matthews can develop under his shadow for the next seven years.
Leafs may have to bite the bullet for one more season with subpar D but they'll have more than enough picks and prospects next summer to make a significant deal.

Remember when there was a report that Dubas was interested in Polak even though he wasnt, and there were comments like "but I was told that someone like Dubas would never be interested, and all I can do is laugh at those those that said he wouldnt be"
Turns out he never actually wanted him back. The person with the comment looks silly now.

We didn't lose any assets to acquire Tavares other than cap space. If Karlsson had been a UFA then it's a different story but Dubas had the chance to acquire an elite player without losing players or prospects and took it.
