It seems as though Leafs are having to pay a premium to sign their own restricted free agents, despite other teams signing their players at reasonable or 'home town discounted costs'

This is even after tge fact that Leafs are able to pay their players largely in bonuses which significantly lowers the tax rate to the point where taxes are significantly reduced.

Having said this, how much do you think Marner will get compared to Brayden Point?

Prove that the tax difference are negligible. Show your work

Point should get more but he is negotiating against a budget team who's top player is making 9.5. Marner is negotiating against a rich team who's top players are making 11 and 11.6.

Marner cause Stevie Y gets good deals, dubas gets bent over.

If point was a leaf and Marner was in Tampa, point would get more.

Marner gets less term and more money.

Why Point?

Rantanen is the main comparison that should be looked at going into Marner's negotiations.

Point should be getting paid a lot more than Marner. But he won't.

Interesting how increased salaries due to cap percentage only applies to Leafs players and no one else.

Players don’t care whether their comparable is a teammate or on another team. They will use whatever argument helps them most. Dubas should be doing the same, and not caving to the bogus “I should be paid the same as Matthews” argument. Instead, Dubas should let Point (and Rantanen) sign first, and then be insisting that Marner is not worth Point’s (and Rantanen’s) money.

Marner will get more and it will be so "worse deal"

But it's not a Dubas issue.

It's vastly a Toronto media issue. They talk up our young guys and love to drive the hype train.

Twice a week there's a terrible article stating that "Toronto player ____ is worth $$$$$$$$$$"

If these players were resigning in Florida or Carolina would they get paid a premium? Heck no.

Can you expand on that?

Tax implications make things difficult to compare.

If signed in the same market, Point would get more than Marner and rightly so. With the tax issue, Marner may end up signing at a similar or higher cap hit.

That being said it's up to Dubas to set the price and not bend. Is it a risk yes but nothing ventured nothing gained. If he showed more fortitude and let Nylander sit the season I bet the Matthews and Marner camp would be changing their tone but he lost the game of chicken and now is paying for it across the board. I expect the Marner contract to come in at 11.616 x 5.

Dubas also could have called out the Toronto media for inflating contracts with their constant focus on Toronto RFAs but choose to be nice guy and be cordial with the media. Dubas should be held accountable for all his contracts he gives out.

Agents want to use comparables when it suits their clients.

Does Marner deserve Kucherov money + inflation? Of course not. Will he get it? Probably.
