McDavid
Hall
Nuge
Nurse
Klefbom
Eberle

Yakupov and Drai still have some work to do to get into that category

Mcdavid, Hall, and possibly Nurse depending how he turns out.

The rest are just replaceable NHL parts that every NHL team has.

Your idea of replaceable is a lot diffrent then mine

Probably

I tend to only think of guys who fit into the mold of "core" as players who demonstrated exceptional ability or talent that you can build a team around. Guys like Eberle/RNH/Yakupov/Klefbom/Drai are certainly talented, but they aren't unique or franchise defining to me.

Probably shouldn't even list Nurse by that criteria, as who knows how he'll turn out at the NHL level, but I can't help but feel there might be an exceptional defenseman there.

McDavid if he can play to his potential. No one else has shown enough yet to be considered core. RNH is pretty close. He is the best all round player out of the "kids". I consider Pouliot our MVP at the moment. I'd also add Nurse to "potentially" be part of that core. If he pans out, then a tough, minute eating D-man is very valuable and would be very difficult to ever get by way of trade.

Core: players you do not trade and build around

McDavid, Hall, RNH, Nurse

Important piece you trade to fill holes, otherwise great pieces on team

Eberle, Klefbom, 2015 version of Lander, Draisaitl, Yakupov

McDavid and Hall. All other players should be available. I would trade Nuge for a lot of potential players out there, including a Backes. We need a Kesler-like no.2 C. Make no mistake, McDavid will be the no. 1 C on this team by the end of next season. I would love to see something gutsy like RNH+ for Backes and Bouwmeester, for example.

Core:
Hall - McDavid
Klefbom
Nurse

--------------------

RNH and Draisaitl duke it out for #2C
Eberle and Yakupov duke it out for #1RW
Yakimov and Lander duke it out for #3C

Hall, RNH, McDavid, and Nurse.

This. But to me core doesn't necessarily mean 'wouldn't trade under any circumstance'

For instance I would trade RNH for a more physical centre if the opportunity arose. Or Hall if OEL was on the table. It doesn't mean they're not part of the core.

Core players = Guys I'd want to keep around for the next 10 years no matter what:

McDavid, Hall, RNH, Klefbom, and Nurse. (Maybe Broissoit).

Eberle, Draisaitl, Yakupov, etc, I wouldn't mind moving for other pieces to help improve our team.

Since we don't have McDavid yet, here are mine:

D. Nurse
O. Klefbom
J. Schultz
M. Fayne
T. Hall
R. Nugent-Hopkins
N. Yakupov
J. Eberle
L. Draisaitl

I am honestly opposed to trading any of these players.

McDavid, Hall and Nugent-Hopkins.

For a true core, that is mine as well. The rest either aren't enough of a sure bet (Klefbom, Nurse, Yakupov, Draisaitl), or are really more complimentary than they are building blocks (Eberle).

That doesn't mean you should trade any of the above. All can be valuable pieces, and could all develop into core players. Just I don't think right now they can be players you need to be deadset on building around.

McDavid
RNH
Hall (I'd part with him for the right package though)
Nurse
Klefbom to an extent

that's it

I want Yakupov to stay especially since he's on a cheaper contract, but he can go for the right price, and I do like Eberle but I think he will eventually have to be moved.

The true interest of this post is how many people think the untradables are more than 3 or less than 3.

We love to fall in love with these players and want to watch them succeed but a GM's job is to constant consider EVERY player tradable. Not to be naive about it, but to consider it.

Easier said than done

I don't think core necessarily means untouchable. Just that these are the foundation blocks of your roster that you want to build around. Everyone else is more or less a complimentary piece.
