Speculation: Who are the Jets losing to expansion? Better question is who are we getting!

1617 GAR numbers for this lot, highlighted the LD:

My eyes are strictly on De Haan, but I'm also looking at Ouellet and McNabb as a fallback. Pretty sure most of this crop is better than the UFA Ds this offseason as well.

It looks like De Haan is exactly what the doctor prescribed! Would be extremely excited if he ends up a Jet.

I'd imagine the Jets aren't the only ones calling up VGK and asking what it would take for them to select De Haan and trade him. If the Jets are calling up GMGM and are like "yeah, so, please don't pick Enstrom, take Dano instead, btw we also want a goalie and a LD from you guys", that could get real expensive, real fast.

2017 1st, petan, plus another prospect for raanta and de Haan

That would give them two firsts for taking de Haan, one from isles and one from jets

de Haan is a very good player, but in my opinion, there will be teams willing and able to pay more than the Jets.

For example, look at the Avs defence situation. Johnson and Barrie on the right. Zadorov? Barberio? on the left.

They could ship a Roslovic type prospect and more to LV and not think twice.

I think here is where our depth pushes us up near the front with being able to use our assets to benefit from this expansion. We have more expendable higher end assets (I would think) then the Avs and I would imagine Chevy would be more willing to part with the 13th than Sakic with the 4th.

Yeah, but Colorado could be willing to part with Duchene for a package of de Haan and a winger.

Or a package of exempt prospects already playing in the AHL/NHL. For example Boikov or Compher.

Jets have good assets. But it is really hard to out bid a team when they're acquiring a guy that will be their undisputed top pairing guy and you're acquiring the guy to likely play on your second pairing, pushing a fairly legitimate 2nd pairing guy (Enstrom) to the 3rd pairing.

But the bigger question is why was he exposed and Pelech protected? Either there's a deal in place for him to stay in NY or he is undervalued by his own team. It's hard to image the Islanders letting go of this guy who is worth a 1st+ to a lot of people to protect a fringe NHLer.

Well, the rumor is that he was specifically exposed in a deal with Las Vegas to keep their hands off the Islanders' exposed forwards.

Personally this doesn't make much sense to me, as they can lose only one forward no matter what. But it is the story coming from some reasonably credible sources.

So it turned out both Manson & CDH are available.

Anyways, notable defensemen available:

Anaheim-Vatanen (26) $4,875,000 (UFA 2020) (RD)
Anaheim-Manson (25) $825,000 (RFA 2018) (RD)
Buffalo-Bogosian (26) $5,142,857 (UFA 2020) (RD)
Chicago-Van Riemsdyk (25) $825,000 (RFA 2018) (RD)
Columbus-Johnson (30) $4,357,143 (UFA 2018) (LD)
Colorado-Wiercioch (26) $800,000 (RFA 2017) (LD)
Dallas-Hamhuis (34) $3,750,000 (UFA 2018) (LD)
Dallas-Oleksiak (24) $918,750 (RFA 2017) (LD)
Detroit-Ouellet (23) $715,000 (RFA 2017) (LD)
Florida-Demers (29) $4,500,000 (UFA 2021) (RD)
L.A.-McNabb (26) $1,700,000 (UFA 2018) (LD)
Minnesota-Dumba (22) $2,550,000 (RFA 2018) (RD)
N.Y.I.-De Haan (26) $1,966,667 (RFA 2017) (LD)
Tampa-Koekkoek (23) $894,167 (RFA 2017) (LD)
Washington-Schmidt (25) $812,500 (RFA 2017) (LD)

Lots of quality defensemen. Still hoping a deal for CDH or Oullet becomes reality for the Jets.

I think both will be protected by the side deals.

NYI deal as reported would be so far beyond terrible that words fail.
If Isles are giving up a 1st it has to be for more than protecting some unnamed forwards, none of whom can be worth as much as CDH. It has to be to protect both Nelson and De Haan at least.

Who are the Jets losing to expansion?

NO ONE!!!!

Better question is who are we getting!

14 defensemen selected by Vegas. 3 shoot right. 11 shoot left.

Let the auction begin. Here's the long awaited list of LD's available from Vegas:

1) Mark Methot (32) $4,900,000 (UFA 2019)
2) Jason Garrison (32) $4,600,000 (UFA 2018)
3) Alexei Emelin (31) $4,100,000 (UFA 2018)
4) Luca Abisa (27) $3,600,000 (UFA 2018)
5) Clayton Stoner (32) $3,250,000 (UFA 2018)
6) David Schlemenko (30) $2,100,000 (UFA 2020)
7) Brayden McNabb (26) $1,700,000 (UFA 2018)
8) Jon Merrill (25) $1,137,500 (RFA 2018)
9) Shea Theodore (21) $863,333 (RFA 2018)
10) Griffin Reinhart (23) (RFA 2017)
11) Nate Schmidt (25) (RFA 2017)

Who do you like?

Does Chevy have a deal in place?

Interesting to note that it's expected RD Colin Miller was acquired to move. Moving him leaves Vegas with only 2 RD.

Who's got extra RD & needs LD?

Let's go Chevy.

But here's what happens when you adjust the maximum value to Trouba's overall of 15 GAR (highest on Jets):

VGK is gonna make out like bandits and it makes me sick.

How does this compare with the Jets existing group of Morrissey, Chiarot, Melchiori & Stuart?

Love to see their GAR's.

There obviously isn't much data on Melchiori.

Are McNabb & Merrill worth exploring over our existing options?

(Melchiori was a 0 overall in 330 minutes played)

I agree most of them are better than Chiarot, Stuart, and Melchiori, but the issue with this crop is that most of them are UFA 2018 and will likely cost a lot for pretty minimal improvement, whom might not stay after the season.

(Merrill is the smaller one)

Merrill is kinda all over the place, but someone I would comfortably have on the third pairing/press box for injury sake, a Chiarot replacement (but nearly as good as Postma if you will)... McNabb I'd get to replace Enstrom. A lot will likely go after McNabb for their first or second pairing, however, and will and should definitely be an expensive pickup.

I wonder if Myers has recovered to the point where he can still be effective and put in 60+ games a year. If we could convince someone of that and throw in some snake oil, maybe we could get Methot.

That would be an awful trade, IMO. Myers is a good #4, if healthy. Methot is an aging, declining and not very good anymore 5/6.

So I have a Word document sitting on my desktop that's about 6 pages long (excluding pictures) detailing my thoughts and analysis on the "top 5 LHD choices" for the Jets. It's obviously too long for a forum post but would probably look nice on a website. Any recommendations?

EDIT: And who do I contact and how (excluding Twitter because I still wish to remain somewhat anonymous)?

Maybe PM someone on here who blogs at Jets nation and they might be able to put it up. I'd be interested in reading it.

Not quite sure who belongs to what profiles, and I'm sure Garret is too busy getting actual money for his actual work and not on here anymore.

For those who want to read it, give this PDF a download. If any blogger or whatever reads it and likes it, feel free to PM me. I like doing these long posts with an analytical viewpoint.

Thanks for putting this together! My first thought is that Vegas doesn't trade any player they presented at the awards show aka McNabb.

Ahh, wasn't aware he was brought on stage. Was only aware of Fleury.

(If they really wanted, they could probably get two first round picks for him... wait, where have I heard that before?)

Is it just me?

I can't say I'm at all impressed with what McPhee put together.

And some of the compensation he's receiving? A 5th for Schlemko who's on a sweethearts deal.

He should be ashamed of that deal & where was Chevy? Our 5th rounder was better than Montreal's.

Shocked people are upset about the Thorburn selection. A huge expansion victory for the Jets, but we weren't the only ones.

Pick after pick, deal after deal McPhee appears to be have learned nothing since being swindled by Nashville. The Forsberg deal may end considered one of the worst deals of all time.

Next time an expansion team enters the league, let an analytics guy make all the selections.

Their team is garbage.

The offseason excitement of getting a De Hann, Vatanen, Oleksiak, Mueller, Demers, ect are instead met with a bunch of 30+ year old players on the decline a year away from UFA status.

I'm really at a loss for what happened yesterday.

Ok I get it deals were made so that teams kept their roster intact. But what kind of deals? Where's the compensation?

If moving up from 24 to 13 is, as some discuss, the equivalent of a 3rd round draft pick AND we also gave Vegas a 2019 3rd rounder then it's easy math.

Apparently $500 million in expansion fees gets you sixty 3rd round draft picks.

McPhee's a idiot.

Chiarot & Melchiori may both make the Jets this year unless Chevy can join the rest of the league trading peanuts for players & steal Merrill or McNabb before someone else rips McPhee off.

On an offnote, was Merrill Trouba's defensive partner in Michigan in 2012-2013?
