Didn't like Clayton Keller pick at the time, wanted Logan Brown.

I guess i'm okay with that pick now :sarcasm:

Also thought that Jake Virtanen would end up being somehow like Mark Scheifele. Yup I was wrong

I was a kid when the Oilers drafted Jason Arnott 7th overall and he went right to the NHL and scored 33 goals that year. Every year after that I believed the Oilers had another automatic top player coming up. Jason Bonsignore, Steve Kelly, Boyd Devereaux, Jani Rita after that slapshot he unleashed from the blueline at the WJC. The only good thing from that time for me was that it really got me into following prospects at a young age.

I thought McIlrath would be a serviceable middle pairing guy, especially when he had that run where he and Yandle were paired together and he had a few games in a row where he had a difference making hit, fight or play.

Never thought he was likely to live up to his draft position but didn't expect him to accomplish so little.

I was pretty sure he'd rebound in Florida and at least be a serviceable d-man when given another chance.

I might make a post about non-Red Wings draftees at some point, but keeping it close to home:

Tom McCollum - Expected him to be a decent backup. Amounted to nothing at the NHL level.

Petr Mrazek - Expected him to dominate the NHL for a decade. He only did that for about 18 months. Doesn't look like he's going to rebound from his 24th birthday.

Teemu Pulkkinen - Thought he'd be a perennial 30-goal scorer. He is, just in the AHL.

Tomas Jurco - He looked to me to be the replacement for Johan Franzen or Marian Hossa-lite. A consistent Top-6 50+ point scorer. Didn't amount to much.

Mattias Backman - Thought he'd make an impact as an offensive defenseman in the NHL. Never played a single game.

Anthony Mantha - Really expected him to be a bust at the NHL level. Very happy to be wrong about this one. I think Leadership on and off the ice has helped alleviate/correct things in his personality and game that looked like red flags to me.

As a lifelong QMJHL season ticket holder, I have many rights and many totally wrongs.... here are my main quotes...

- "Sven Andrighetto will have a better career than Nikita Kucherov" (after back to back games vs Rouyn when they played toghether)

- "Ondrej Palat is not near to be good enough to play in the NHL, he floats way too much" (to my defense, he played like shit that game)

-"Brandon Gormley will be a dominant force in the NHL"

Jonathan Audy Marchesseault was one of the player I hated the most to Watch, boy was he arrogant, and I thought that he wasn't a good hockey player.

Nathan Beaulieu was so fluid I thought he'd be dominant.

as for my team.....

Eric fichaud would be better than Felix Potvin and Marc Denis
Eric gelinas would make it.
Marek Zagrapan will bust (right), but Stan Lascek will be a top player in the NHL
I thought Nicolas Deschamps could become a good 3rd line center

Watching Brendl in the Memorial Cup in 1999. He was just so dangerous at all times it gave you that same edge of your seat sensation Jagr triggered around that time, where he just felt like at any moment he could do something. Very few players I've ever seen in junior that are that dominant. You knew he was high risk due to being one dimensional, but it's incredible to me he only scored 11 NHL goals.

Brendl couldn't skate for crap at the NHL level. He had a lethal shot but not the skating to buy himself space to use it or the smarts at the NHL level to find open ice to be in position to receive a pass and one time or get a shot off.

Griffin Reinhart really shocked me that he became nothing. I never was a huge fan of that draft, at the time I wanted Galchenyuk, Grigorenko or Forsberg and couldn’t imagine the leafs taking a d man but I thought if they did I was hoping it was Trouba or Reinhart since they would at the very least become top 4 guys with top D man potential.

Shinkaruk busting is a surprise to me, i thought he would be a top 6 forward and quickly.

A little early but most Sabres fans are very concerned Alex Nylander may bust. Ray Ferraro during this year's WJC predicted he will unless Nylander wakes up, just doesn't move his feet and get involved enough. Has to show more this season or he'll be traded before 2020.

Sam Bennett. In his draft year I thought he could become a PPG player in the NHL. He’s still young but I really don’t see it anymore.

On the other hand, the first few games of Gaudreau I caught I didn’t thought he could make it to the next level. Very happy to be wrong about this one, exciting player!

Funny thing: I’m not even a Flames fan!

I was upset when the Wings took Tyler Bertuzzi in the second a few years back. He's developed into quite a good middle 6 agitator and would probably be a first rounder in a redraft.

After his post-draft season in the Liiga, I was sure Teemu Pulkkinen would have an NHL career.
Poor Pulks. If he was born in 1965-1970, he'd be a 500+ goal scorer HoF.

I thought Cowen would be great.
I thought Dzingel would never make the NHL and, when he did, I thought he wouldn't stick.

I didn't think he'd be a superstar, but I was high on Jon Merrill. Looked solid as a freshman playing big minutes for a team that lost in OT of the National Championship game. Felt confident that he'd be a 20 minute, 30 point defenseman in the near future.

Missed half of his sophomore year due to an off ice incident, then missed half of his junior year due to injury. Had a solid enough AHL debut and a reasonably decent NHL rookie campaign. But he fell in and out of the lineup, and his offense never quite developed.

During his last year with the Devils, injuries basically forced the coaches to give Merrill a ton of minutes. For a few weeks, he was logging 20+ minutes and played pretty well. But once everybody got healthy, he regressed again.

Sam Bennett is probably my worst draft call, as I had him first overall and thought he'd become a Jonathan Toews type player. Another player I thought would amount to something at one point was Lazar, after his first WJC. To be honest my draft record isn't as bad as I thought it would be after browsing through the draft, not too many terrible calls.

I thought Mark Mitera was going to be a stud on the back end when ducks drafted him 19th in 2006....... never played an NHL game. Although in fairness to him he tore his acl his final year of college so i'm not sure how they affected his game afterwards.

I've come here to embarrass myself. I've been in the same dynasty league since 2010. These are my first round draft picks for that league based on my expert prospect analysis:

2010: Brandon Gormley - I saw him in the memorial cup and I absolutely had to have him, passed on Jaden Schwartz and Kuznetsov to take him
2011: Ryan Murphy - I saw him in several games and thought I had the next Paul Coffey on my hands. Despite the fact that this was a terrible draft overall, I passed on the likes of JT Miller, Oscar Klefbom & Rikard Rakell to take him
2012: Mikhail Grigorenko - I couldn't believe my luck when he fell to me at 9th overall in my fantasy draft. The big, agile Russian centerman was a sure thing I thought. Passed on Trouba, Hertl, Vasilevski to take him.
2013: Curtis Lazar - I fell in love with the kid, not the player due to his leadership and charisma at the WJC that year, I thought for sure he would turn himself into a quality NHL player, if only by force of his will. I thought I had the next Chris Drury on my hands. I passed on Shea Theodore, Anthony Mantha and Ryan Pulock among others to take him.
2014: Antony DeAngelo - I couldn't believe my luck when he fell all the way to #17 in my draft, I saw him in several games for Sarnia and he was the most talented offensive player I had ever seen at his age. I passed on Fabbri, Kapanen, Schmaltz & Pastrnak to take him.
2015: Pavel Zacha. Based on how poorly I had drafted over the previous 5 years, I had #5 overall. I fell in love with Zacha, I can't even bear to think about all the players I passed on to take him. Holy shit.
2016: German Rubtsov. I'm starting to get really depressed.
2017: Juuso Valimaki...I have no idea.

So, in summary, if you are ever in need of an ace talent evaluator for your fantasy team, just PM me and ask me who I'm taking in the 1st round and then at least you have one player to eliminate from consideration.

Cheers

Players I taught would be good

Luke Schenn : Was pretty sure after his rookie year he was going to be the next captain of the Leafs and one of the better stay at home d-man in the league

MSP: Wanted the Leafs to trade up and take him.Taught he would be a sure thing as a top 6 player

Jared Cowen,Keith Aulie and Tyler Myers: Taught all of them were going to be very good defensive player with Myers being a top 2 d-man....boy was I wrong

Matt Dumba: I know we shouldnt evaluate players based off of WJC but Dumba looked really really bad out there.

Cody Hodgson : Taught he would be one of the better 2-way players in the league ala Patrice Bergeron

Players who surprised me:

Erik Karlsson: knew the Sens made a good pick and taught he would be a pp specialist but he has certainly showed he's the best d-man in the league these past few years.

Auston Matthews: As a Leaf fan, I have to admit I saw him as a solid two way player who would probably play sheltered minutes and contribute like 15 goals and 20 assists. He is already more then I expected and I only expect him to get even better.

Mark Stone : Taught for sure his skating would hold him back. Takeway leader in the past few years and excellent offensive player

Same for me on Auston Matthews I would have pick Laine 10 times ahead but now... I'm not so sure

I thought Nigel Dawes was going to be 30 goal scorer.

I also thought Yanni Gourde was going to bust after a bunch of media types picked him for the Calder this past season. He didn't win it, but he was great!
