Horvat just wouldn’t fall below 2C unless it was in a truly stacked situation. Someone would switch to wing, and I mean, Horvat is on pace for 37 goals and 72 points this season while leading the lead in face offs taken and face off wins (54%). He just seems like an ideal 2C on any team. He also doesn’t get the benefit of playing with stars, he plays with second tier Canuck players for the most part like Virtanen and Eriksson.

As a Canucks fan I found this question really interesting. heres what I think
1C: Columbus, Montreal, NYR, Detriot, NJ, Minnesota, Arizona, St. louis, Chicago,
Nope.

Likely 2C or top 6 wing.

He and Naz would split as 3s on Toronto, but if we theoretically got him for free for giving Canucks Leafs legend Juicy Josh Leivo, I think we'd probably trade Naz or him?? Leafs aren't a good team to do that with, he is a legit 2 and an extremely high end 3 right now.

Pardon my ignorance, but I don’t see a centerman on the Blues who is better than Horvat. Who would play 1C above him?
Ryan O'Reilly.

Given Schenn's chemistry with Schwartz, it's not crazy to think he might also play C w/ Horvat moving to W.

Horvat’s sitting at 17-17-34 in 38 games, while playing excellent defense.

For reference, these are some of the centres he’s outscoring:

O’Rielly
Seguin
Toews
Drouin
Zibanejad
Krejci
Johansen
Getzlaf
Pavelski
Johnson
Couturier
E. Staal
Kopitar
Hischier
Schenn

I find it more and more difficult to accept arguments that he isn’t one of the best 30 centres in the NHL.

Please show your math on this one.

...and that's not even taking into account a defensive comparison between ROR and Horvat.

EDIT: ahh ok, if you update stats after the game tonight then I guess Horvat has 2 more points (in 5 more games). If you dig into their advanced stats, ROR really stands out, but here are some common metrics to compare Horvat and ROR:

GP GAP PPG+/- TOIshTOI 0ZS%FO%
Horvat 38171734 .89-120:540:4138.5 54.0
ROR 33 13 19 32 .97+3 20:302:1949.3 59.7

3C on Toronto, Pittsburgh, Tampa. Probably converted to wing on at least one of those teams to play in the top 6

Other than that he's a 1B/2 centre on every other team. He's freaking good, plays excellent defense, great power in his stride, can bury it, and is a leader. He's the guy you have centering your 2nd line if you are a Cup contending team. Hard for a team in the cap era to have him as a 3C though that's why I think he'd be a winger on the teams listed above

He'd be 3c on caps as well, however I would move him onto the 2nd line wing spot if the caps theoretically had him

He'd be third on the Leafs.

On the one hand, sorry Naz. On the other hand, Goddamn do we have some top end centres that it's impressive that Horvat would be relegated to third line duty.

Horvat plays with two wooden tables at even strength for most of the year. Those stats mean nothing given the quality of linemates. Also with less offensive zone starts. If you start in your own zone with Leipsic and Roussel on your wing you think any offense is happening?

ROR most frequent linemates are Tarasenko , Steen and Schwartz when healthy.

Quality of team mates play a role here, Horvat doesn’t get anyone who is currently on pace for more than 40 points. He is a “do it yourself” offensive driver though, that’s a really valuable trait for a 2C as it allows you to stack your first line. Kesler used to have that trait, but it was less of a benefit for him.

Also, Horvat is literally 4 years younger and is showing year to year progression. This is the first year O’Reilly is putting up higher offensive numbers.

I suppose you can make a case for it though.

So basically a 1C or sharing 1C duties on 5-10 teams and would be a top 6 fwd on all remaining teams whether as a C or shifted to wing (Pitts TB Wash Tor). You know, unless you share the balanced view of respected posters like @Holymakinaw in which case hes clearly a 4C

What a pick 5 years ago and tbh who would have seen this elevation even just two years ago??
