Current League: NCRHA (national collegiate roller hockey association) i play for SF state
Some brief background info: i started playing roller when i was 8. the league was tiny, only 4 teams per division and only 7 or 8 guys on each team. hockey isn't very popular here. i played in this league for 3 years before stopping to play baseball. a year later i returned to this league but had to play in a higher division because i was older. that year was pretty rough playing with the older guys but i think it made me a much better player.
the next year the league got shut down due to lack of interest and some of the older guys from the highest division organized sunday morning pick up. i decided to go and that was a regular thing for me for a few months. after a while people stopped showing and it looked like it wouldn't be possible for me to continue playing hockey, so i went back to baseball for a couple years.
when i started high school i dropped baseball and picked up lacrosse and then, out of nowhere, the roller hockey league reopened at the end of my freshman year. at this point i was 14 and the middle division was for kids ages 11 to 14 so i entered it despite the fact that i played pick up with the adults from the 15 and up division. needless to say, the middle division was insanely easy for me after so much time playing with grown men and i tore it up that year with 20 goals in 8 games, including 6 goals in the championship game.
the next year, the league only had one division and it was for kids 8 to 11. once again i had no way to play hockey so i returned to lacrosse. now fast forward 4 years, to 2009-2010. midway through my first year at SF state i hear that a couple guys are looking to start a roller hockey team at school. i get in touch with them and we meet up and form a club constitution to present to the sports club board. we got approved and started recruiting players around campus and playing pick up at the bladium sports club in Alameda (about 45 minutes away from campus). i hadn't played since 9th grade so i had to get all new gear and out a lot of effort into getting good again. my skating was still fine but my shot had really suffered. anyways i played once a week pick up with the other guys from school for a couple months and shook the rust off. we now have 8 committed players on our club and hope to add at least 5 more by september. our first official NCRHA tourney is at the end of october.
