I actually think the current system is working better than it ever has. Less and less games are going to the shootout.

One thing I know for certain is that we are never going back to ties. Just looks bad for the sport.

I'd change to the European soccer scoring system, which is not an option here. 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie, zero for a loss. All games end after 60 minutes with no overtime or shootout. Keep playoff overtime as is.

As much fun as 3 on 3 overtime is to watch it doesn't reflect who the best 5 on 5 team is.

NHLPA is never going to agree on making the game longer than the 5 min OT without demanding quite a bit from the NHL. So it won't happen.

Continuous OT is literally impossible to implement in the regular season due to rules

So it shouldnt even be a poll option. But of course its winning lol

As I said I don’t think it’s viable but added it due to popular demand. You can ignore it :D

3 on 3 is slowing down drastically and this year almost as bad as shootout. its like the emergence of the trap when minnesota exploited it.

even better would be 2 pts any win, 0 pts any loss. nice and simple

That’s the simplest one, but I think the difference between a shootout win and a loss is pretty much a coin toss, so if you don’t allow ties and want to keep the shootout a three point system would be fairer.

I fail to see why a winner needs to be forced though?

10 min OT (maybe a break around 5 mins in if players gassed) and then SO

10 minutes of Overtime (5 minutes of 4 on 4, then 5 minutes of 3 on 3).
Shootout
  • RW (Regulation Win): 3 points
  • OSW (Overtime / Shootout Win): 2 points
  • OSL (Overtime / Shootout Loss): 1 point
  • RL (Regulation Loss): 0 points
Record would be displayed as such...
RW - RL - RT (OSW - OSL)

For example, the Devils record from last year would look like...
33-29-20
(11-9)

reg win should mean more since its how hockey is meant to be played. Losing 3 on 3 or SO is just bad luck most of the time.
yeah, im more for keeping it simple. scrap the 3on3 and shootout. continuous ot would be tough all year so shootout isnt so bad. its also part of hockey more than 5 minutes of 3on3 or 4on4. ties are just boring and unsatisfying at least to me.

Best option:

3v3, then 2v2, then 1v1, then tie.
Maybe 3 or 4 minutes for each. Get rid of the shootout.
