Rivalries have always been fan base first. Sure players in the old days hated each other and that changed with free agency but that's the closest SE is to being right.
You don't need to look any further than college sports to see rivalries are real. Players are in school four to five, maybe six, years. Yet rivalries are alive and well in all sports.
