VR controlled super robots that will become sentient and from there, well just go watch the 1999 smash film "The Matrix."

Coed and boring as hell but it will still make money because there will be more women fans watching.

In 1988-89
there were 21 teams
it had the highest point total ever put up by a player not named Gretzky or lemieux (yzerman, and he still was third in scoring that season)
And we learned that no player in completely untouchable

And 30 years before that, in 1958-59:

-8 years away from the league doubling in size.
-The top scoring team averaged 3.69 gpg, the bottom 2.39.
-The #1 seed, better than #2 by 18 points, played the 3rd seed in the 1st round. The 2nd place team got the easier draw. Man, when are they going to fix that playoff format?

I think 4 best of 7 series is perfect until 16 teams would make up less than a third of the league

On a serious note I feel we will eventually replace on ice refs with a technology that allows for more accurate calls on icing, penalties and goals. And depending on how far robotics have come we may even have on ice police that patrol the play from above and break up fights with relative ease by just grabbing a player and removing him from the play entirely.

Goalie equipment will shrink and may even be form fitting eventually. Same goes for the rest of the gear skaters use. I could see a full body suit that absorbs all impact and is light in weight eventually being implemented. Allowing players to reach speeds and absorb collisions at a much higher rate. Defensive systems will take advantage and players will have zero fear in blocking shots or going to the net. Rehab for injuries will undoubtadly be at a higher level.

39 teams. It seems like Bettmans strategy now is to add more teams to the league to make the owners happy, like cmon, you know he's there to make the owners happy, not the fans, since adding one team is auto money in pockets of existing owners.

More teams lead to opening up scoring more and most fans and potential new fans prefer more scoring

Most new fans also quickly realize that scoring chances are far more responsible for an exciting product than the actual scoring.

End to end, back and forth, up and down is much better than - end to centre ice face off.

More teams also leads to a watered down talent pool.
The best players are still playing they occasionally get matched up against worse players, it’s easier to see their skill when they is a bigger gap in their skill levels which is exactly the point

If the league had 20 teams today, just as an arbitrary number, 3rd lines would be filled with star players.

It the league had 50 teams, 2nd lines would have scrubs on them.

This is why the international tournaments are good. Teams filled with star players rather than players just to fill out rosters.

within the next 30 years, I could see the NHL reach an agreement with some of the Euro leagues to create a European division of an equal number of teams which will create a giant world league. You'll have a European Conference and a North American Conference which will eventually face off for the Stanley Cup at the end of the playoff. It'll be the first true global league in all of sports.

If the league had 30 teams there would be far too much parity between players which leads to a more defensive game, who’s more likely to be undressed by an average top 6 player? A scrub or another another average top 6 player?
