In 1988-89
there were 21 teams
it had the highest point total ever put up by a player not named Gretzky or lemieux (yzerman, and he still was third in scoring that season)
And we learned that no player in completely untouchable
60 yo McDavid will be leading the league in scoring with 150 points.
I think 4 best of 7 series is perfect until 16 teams would make up less than a third of the leagueAnd 30 years before that, in 1958-59:
-8 years away from the league doubling in size.
-The top scoring team averaged 3.69 gpg, the bottom 2.39.
-The #1 seed, better than #2 by 18 points, played the 3rd seed in the 1st round. The 2nd place team got the easier draw. Man, when are they going to fix that playoff format?
More teams lead to opening up scoring more and most fans and potential new fans prefer more scoring39 teams. It seems like Bettmans strategy now is to add more teams to the league to make the owners happy, like cmon, you know he's there to make the owners happy, not the fans, since adding one team is auto money in pockets of existing owners.
or rename it the POS award..... finally some awards for MarchandJust get rid of the Mark Messier Leadership Award and I'll be happy.
not sure if serious.More teams lead to opening up scoring more and most fans and potential new fans prefer more scoring
The best players are still playing they occasionally get matched up against worse players, it’s easier to see their skill when they is a bigger gap in their skill levels which is exactly the pointMore teams also leads to a watered down talent pool.
If the league had 20 teams today, just as an arbitrary number, 3rd lines would be filled with star players. The best players are still playing they occasionally get matched up against worse players, it’s easier to see their skill when they is a bigger gap in their skill levels which is exactly the point
If the league had 30 teams there would be far too much parity between players which leads to a more defensive game, who’s more likely to be undressed by an average top 6 player? A scrub or another another average top 6 player? If the league had 20 teams today, just as an arbitrary number, 3rd lines would be filled with star players.
It the league had 50 teams, 2nd lines would have scrubs on them.
This is why the international tournaments are good. Teams filled with star players rather than players just to fill out rosters.
