I get that some people don't like Rush, but to say that they can't play their instruments is just clearly very absurd.

Indeed. I'm not exactly a Rush fan, I like some of their music but they're definitely an acquired taste...but to say they can't play their instruments while singing the praises of a run of the mill late-90s band like Our Lady Peace? Either he's deliberately being facetious or he has a tin ear.

Thread turned into "list your favorite artist/group from a genre you listen to".

Aphex Twin would probably be my answer to the question. Got me into Electronic, Ambient which got me into Breakbeat, Drum and Bass, which got me into genres like Industrial which got me into Rock etc.

Led Zeppelin definitely had a big impact on my music choices. I try to find their sound in different bands and those that carry a similar bluesy kind of rock sound I tend to latch on to. I especially love bands where I can hear them play the instruments, not just the sound the instruments make..if that makes any sense. I like hearing the drums and bass especially. But yeah, Zeppelin definitely shaped my taste.

He probably didn't count rush as an actual band since they're a bunch of talentless hacks who can't play their instruments. Our lady peace now that is what a call a band.

Is this a joke? They are considered three of the best instrumentalists in music today. Just look at the documentary about them and how many other musicians they influenced. As for albums sold and touring power again OLP can't even hold Rush's lunch bag.

If anything, OLP is an average band at best who has done nothing of note in a long time.

As most kids around here in the early 90's, I listened to hit radio stations that played everything from pop and early rap to rock. Guns N' Roses is the first band I remember ever really standing out to me (this is when November Rain was on the charts for what seemed like three years). My brother bought Use Your Illusion 1 and I listened to it extensively. When I bought my first albums I got a varied selection which included Barenaked Ladies' "Gordon", Bryan Adams' "Waking Up the Neighbours", Naughty By Nature's "19 Naughty III" and Metallica's Black album. While each of 'em had their good songs, Metallica by far is the one that stuck the most, so I bought all of their discography over the next few years, and started getting into hard rock/thrash more than anything else (Metallica became my favourite band by a considerable margin and made me learn the guitar so I could thrash along). I still listen to most genres though. IMHO there's only good music and bad music, not good genres and bad ones. Some genres simply have a lot more listenable music in general.

Started out on Def Leppard (the first 4 albums), then around 8 I moved on to White Zombie, then shortly after I found Metallica and Megadeth.

Probably prime Bon Jovi.

That got me into huge choruses and arena/melodic rock/AOR in general which I still love today.

My fav period of music is 84-87 pop but there isn't a specific band that got me into all that music specifically...it's just the overall sound. Or the band is just really hard to nail down. Maybe Duran Duran.

Well put! Aside from you being a band front-runner in picking the best of all time LOL, your avatar is worth a mention to, especially for any singers out there, as Cantrell complimenting Layne to me is the only comparison I have to Simon and Garfunkel's perfect vocal chemistry.

The fifa 03 soundtrack had a few good bands on it . Two of them were Idlewild and S portfreundde Stilller who ere german. the reason why the latter were key is because those guys led me to the discovery that I can enjoy rock /indie in other languages which led me to discover this quite a few bands but mainly this Nordic band that to this day I maintain is better than Radioheadd in terms of final discography :

I circled back to Idlewild a few years after that to listen to their albums, 100 Broken Windows from 2000 is still one of the best pure indiie--rock albums I know.

also cant discont the influence of the nhl 2002 soundtrack

edit this student teacher so this ***** in grade 7 and thinking back she was probably a early day hipster. so this ***** she does this exercise in class where she says put your heads down or close your eye os something stupid like that and write down what you think of the song. The song she played was beautiful day by u2 and then I remember going home and then finding kazza or emule or whatever that we were using those dasy and downloading it. then I downloaded Elevation by them and id din't like it as much and they didn't really attract me. I don't listen to u2 now cose there's dozens of other bands from the british isles from the 80s and 90s I like more but the point is that this u2 song made me realize what guitar music was. I didnt bother much with music before then because it was all that nsyn backstrreet spice girls and stuff in grade school that put me off music for a few years because choreographed dancing to music is stupid

I remember seeing Propagandhi play at Ozzies in '92, I think. Chris taped a beer can to his junk, and then played "Hallie Sallasse up your Arse", the place was almost stunned. Then they ripped into Hate, Myth, Muscle, Etiquette. I was sold after that. GWAR was always fun too and Bungle made some unique albums.

Rush and OLP should never be compared to one another, but as a teen, I truly enjoyed OLP`s first 4 albums; Naveed, Happiness isn`t a Fish..., Clumsy and Spiritual Machines. It falls big time in quality after that...

as for people saying Rush are a bunch of talentless hacks... not even worthy of a response.

Probably my dad. He was/is a drummer. Always jammed out in the basement and played with different bands. I was around a lot of classic rock, and it's still my favorite.

Other than that, Nirvana Nevermind in 2nd or 3rd grade really got me into grunge until I listened to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in high school.

I agree, OLP had some great music early but have fallen in quality after the first few albums which is sad. At least they lasted longer and are still better than I mother earth...at least IMO.

The Beatles. They were everywhere when I was a kid, from their own recordings to elevator music, they permeated my aural landscape. I didn't dig them like I do today, but they subconsciously affected how I take my music.

Funny you bring up I mother earth... I saw them live last year with Edwin and they were great. OLP had the better overall discography but I always enjoyed IME funk and slap bass.

OLP went downhill when:

Raine stopped his erratic singing style
Raine married chantal kreviaziuk
Mike Turner left the band

I didn't know Edwin was back thought he had being trying for years on a solo career.
